Polscy Architekci Krajobrazu (Polish Landscape Architects) 16 years, 5 months agoCześć Asiu, miło Cię słyszeć…

I’m not sure and often have been wondering if the profession will come out stronger or weaker myself. As a student (3rd year LA) I have seen a growing almost balloon like of enrollment in the LA field, since my 1st year I have witnessed through friends and going to conferences programs with larger than average student numbers in different parts of…[Read more]

I would definetly check out Artlantis as well. It’s quite a powerful rendering program, easy to use, and not to expensive. I’ve had some pretty good experiences working with vegetation, materials and lighting. I think they have a 30-day trial version.

a new rendering system that was based on kerkythea, Twilight is getting great reviews on the sketcucation website, the learning curve is quicker than Kerkythea and it works within sketchup so there is no export needed. I tried the free download and it works very well, the full version cost $99 so it is very nicely priced. The support group forums…[Read more]

I don’t know of any examples I could give you, but maybe there’s a conservatory or museum somewhere that might have a display like that.

there is a free program called Kerkythea that works with sketchup. You build your model in SU as usual and export to Kerkythea. there you can adjust lighting, textures, shadows, etc. The learning curve can be steep (there are tutorials) but it is quite powerful for a free program.

I just read an EXCELLENT article in BusinessWeek on the ‘Lost Generation’ in America. The article particularly focuses on those unemployed under 30 and the long term impact on the individuals and the national economy. The article calls on government to provide more aid for unemployed young people for additional education, internship opps , etc.…[Read more]

Thanks Jennifer.
I enjoyed my time in design/build prior to attending school . I got burned out after about 5 years feeling it was the same thing over and over. Now I can see that it doesnt need to be that way. It wasn’t that the homeowners were demanding the same banal ‘naturalistic colorado alpine’ landscape, but thats basically all a lot of…[Read more]

Hi Ryan –
This post is bit late in the game for your discussion but I just noticed it. I just graduated from MLA program at the U of A this May and can recommend the new College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture building on campus next time you are in Tucson. The outdoor lab / garden was designed by Ten Eyck Associates and is a great…[Read more]

Nick –
One of the main complaints I’ve heard from employers over the years is that the people out of school don’t know %&*@ about build-ability. They can’t detail things because they’ve never been out in the field, don’t know how big a CMU is, can’t spec a light fixture, etc. You get my drift.I’ve worked for strictly design firms mostly, but…[Read more]

I think the new Renzo Piano addition to the Academy of Sciences, in San Francisco, has something like that – although I do not believe the trees are living – and somehow it is part of Maya Lins exhibit? I don’t know if my memory is serving me well on that..but lots of good really revolutionary exhibits there – def. worth checking out…

Nick,
I live in Truckee, CA and totally get the ski thing! Problem is, I don’t ski! Old sports injury keeps me off the slopes. Hiking? My wife and I go with our dogs all year ’round…snowshoes are great excercise!
Anyway,
Violate the rules when job searching. If it says no phone calls, this was a strategy I used several times: I explained that…[Read more]

Sometimes spending two hours wandering the architecture and LA section of the library can do WONDERS for your projects.
The first two ‘classic’ books that come to mind are ‘Infrastructures’ and ‘Groundswell.’
Infrastructures reads almost like a comic book with great loose watercolor and ink illustrations showing the fusion of infrastructure and…[Read more]

Great advice all around, thanks!
I’m gearing up to send another round of inquiries in the next month or so. If the response is as poor as it was back in June, I may need to think this over a little harder or come up with a new strategy.
I’m seeing signs of life in other parts of the country (hello Southern Cali), but not remotely interested in…[Read more]

U of Penn didn’t teach us any graphic skills, so our class hired mike lin to come to teach us over the summer. Yes, he’s a character, but an inspired teacher – I loved it..And like someone else said, still use a lot of his techniques – ‘hit go hit’ ‘fuzzy line’..I grew up in other countries and am very tolerant of personalities..I don’t think…[Read more]
