Excellent article and great perspective on the relationship between the classroom and it’s extension to the campus.
I love the pieces published by this author – she is a great writer and excellent landscape architect which is evident throughout the opinions and expressions she shares in her writings.

Dave, Rob,
Appreciate your input. I feel being skeptic myself and partly looking for new perspective and ideas for my work is where I am coming from.
Thanks again,

I don’t disagree with any of what you just wrote, Chris M.
Full disclosure – I’m not a member.
It is an entity that runs off of all of its memberships. Some are licensed LAs and many are not. I don’t know the demographic or funding source breakdown, but I’m quite certain that the entity, like all entities, is more interested in the expansion and…[Read more] -

I can never understand why so many in our profession are so convinced that the pathway to success is to market the entire profession with the expectation that this will make an LA license like tenure to a professor, a bus pass to a commuter, or an ink stamp at a night club.
It will not perform like a labor union doing collective bargaining. We h…[Read more] -

The “design/build field” is pretty broad. Are you confident that there is enough info targeted to your little corner to make it worthwhile?

I can totally believe you are still hand drawing. Many professionals still are – in fact, I think it sells better. That being said, you simply cannot beat the production power of CAD programs. I believe the time saver standards concise would be useful even to someone who only does hand drawings.
If you need to write really detailed specs, you can…[Read more] -

Thank you Alexander. I know of this seminal work but have yet purchase it. Should have years ago, ALAS!
Believe it or not I still hand draw although if time and money allowed I would invest in Vectorworks. I work on a Mac and hesitate to introduce any Windows software. Also, I would love tutorials on the program but living on Cape Cod has a few…[Read more] -

Elaine, I use Time Saver Standards Concise – Site Construction Details Manual. If you haven’t used it, get it. The book has boiler plate details for just about everything. On top of that, there is a CAD detail package CD (not sure if it comes with it or not) that the book references by file name. This has expedited my construction documents ten…[Read more]

I’m hoping to revive this old thread to see if there might be any new information available that helps narrow down the plant material tested on the Louisiana State Exam? I’ll be signing up to take the test this year and would appreciate any help I can get on this. I currently practice in New England so the plant palette (and plant manual) of…[Read more]

How tall is the wall? What are the soil properties? Is there surcharge at the top of the wall?
Your state’s DOT or the FHWA has some standard drawings, which may help. -

You talk about landscape architecture like it’s some sort of spiritual experience, which is exactly why allied professions (engineering, architecture) don’t take LAs seriously or trust them to sign plans besides planting plans.
