L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 10 years, 10 months agoVladamir might consider one of UCLA’s live prep sessions.
Responding to J. Robert Wainner’s comment, my donated time for travel, to organize and teach LARE live prep sessions is all pro-bono since 1995. My live prep sessions thru Chapters reach many active LARE candidates, during past 3 years for 7 to 9 sessions a year. Agreeing with 1 part of…[Read more] -

Robert,
Thank you so much for your input! It is good to know that you have had a better experience with durability with your Mac (In terms of build quality I feel like Macs are unparalleled). Do you experience any problems with running programs like AutoCAD, Rhino, or ArcGIS with a Mac? I heard from some that the programs run better on a PC…[Read more] -

You’re right on about them needing to be thinned out for their own good. There’s just too much competition for food. We can’t introduce predators or hunt them safely in our neighborhoods. It seems like all we can do is give them more space. It’s sad to see scrawny deer who are just trying to survive. Thanks Tosh.

I’ve seen cattle guards used effectively, which I thought was strange because if they really wanted to they could just leap over them as well. Maybe if their hungry enough they will eventually. Thanks.

I use plantings that are low browse risk, but eventually they’ll be eating everything if we don’t so something. I’m sad to say that as we continue to encroach on their domain, we will have to start thinning out urban/suburban herds. In my home state they higher marksmen and donate the meat. Thanks for the info.

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 10 years, 11 months agoJ.Robert Wainner, thank you for your comments. I think your attitude towards LARE is very common to those of us who have struggled to pass. The extreme cost has never out weighed the benefit and that’s a very unfortunate fact. Maybe thats why we have such a low number of LA’s…..have we neared the high 5000’s yet?

Here in NJ deer are a huge problem as well but it is localized to the region that you are in. Deer prevention approach varies based on client needs, intensity of problem, and budget. I usually reference the Rutgers deer list https://njaes.rutgers.edu/deerresistance/
as it is very comprehensive for plant selection. I have also had success with 8’…[Read more] -

10′ high fence or double row of 6~8′ (often planted with a hedge to screen, yes it’s expensive); spray treatment in CT seems to have pretty good effect as they can go elsewhere, more urban areas maybe be limited (it’s a 1~2 times a season and not too cost prohibitive). They browse everything, and deep in winter it gets really bad (there’s a herd…[Read more]

A 10′ high fence, especially angled out a bit , is usually effective for the most part.

How about very high fencing with those flashy streamers tied on in intervals, Rob – do they help at all? One of the guys at work had fencing that had a gap at about 5 -6′, and the deer sailed neatly through the gap. But according to him, the flashy streamers tied to the fence seem to be of help..

Do you really need to use pervious materials? in a flood plain? or is it a flood way?

Tosh K replied to the topic What do you recommend for a bike path treatment in a floodplain? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 10 years, 11 months ago
there’s a porous rubber (usually recycled tires) product, it’s installed over a gravel base. If wash out is a risk, it’s probably not great (but can be easily replaced). As Dave noted, all porous materials will lose their permeability with silt deposits, but they’ll be fine as a surface.

While I don’t have direct experience with porous concrete, I believe it has to be cleaned every so often (annually?) to essentially vacuum the sediments out or porosity diminishes over time. I wonder if occasional flooding would deposit fine sediments that would become trapped and negate the value of having permeable concrete, resulting in…[Read more]

Take a look at tumbled marble. It sounds expensive but it is in line with the cost of travertine. I have used around pool decks but never for driveway applications. Depending on location/climate, soil conditions, and vehicular load I would suspect you would need a hefty concrete base. http://www.Marmiro.com is my local source.

I would recommend squarespace or cargocollective. Both paid services but so worth it. With squarespace you get your own domain name as well so it’s a little more professional. Stay away from anything that isn’t custom domain name, like behance.net/yourname or cargocollective/yourname. Just shows you haven’tput much effort into it, even if that isn’t true.

Natural stone is the best for not retaining heat, travertine, or light colored limestone are good options…though for driveways those get expensive.
