Alissa,
I graduated in 2010, and am still what I would consider early days as far as my LA career. However, as far as I can tell, there is a demand for the scientific knowledge. My undergrad is in forestry, and I seem to be doing alright. I have had some interest based on my background, and some don’t seem to count it one way or another.
An MLA…[Read more] -

While working on Florida DOT projects, we were specifying Tree Frog http://www.arborguy.com/ on a few projects and they seemed to work out well. As previously mentioned a bit on the pricey side in comparison to traditional tree staking, but aesthetically pleasing. We primarily staked 15 gal to 65 gal oaks/crapes/etc. and sabal palms up to 24…[Read more]

I think you will find most of the online photo hosting services support this. Haven’t investigated deeply but I believe Shutterfly, Flickr, etc. all support this.

All these methods can be made to work just fine. It is a tradeoff of expense and aesthetics. Start with the problem and work your way back to the hardware to use.

Highway department (state DOTs) requirements probably won’t add much cost but if it is in a DOT R.O.W., then an encroachment permit will be required and this could affect your schedule so run this down early in your process. Even if it’s municipal R.O.W. something like this will require significant design review time so keep that in mind also. O…[Read more]

Your example is obviously at least five lanes, but I can easily see it hitting half to three-quarters of a million for a three lane version. The biggest wildcard I think would be the amount of custom metalwork.
Back in 2007 or so I worked on what was essentially a higher-end ranch gate – masonry (stone) column bases with wing walls, and timbers fo…[Read more] -

Generally agree. Section 4 requires studying basically everything in the two la bibles and then some.
My take is that the lare is a reflection of the direction the practice is going–less design and craft, more management and delegation. -

Glad to say I passed a couple months ago, first try. Also thought sections 3 and 4 were easy, but could see how someone could be frustrated by the material. Section 4 had very few practical grading vignettes. It was mostly multiple choice and required alot of cognition, careful reading, critical thinking, focus, and common sense

I would suspect the cost might be compared to one of the commercial monster “billboards” that have evolved (x a factor of 2?) since it has tower elements plus a heavy supported horizontal metal element, if you can track that down. Or a giant amusement park gateway or 1/2 a bridge of some kind? That’s a wild ballpark approach if you can’t track…[Read more]

If you are still in school – force yourself to use it for a project. It is a simple program to learn if you already know AutoCad, especially with the command line. I watched the whole Lynda tutorial series (for a class/grade) but it wasn’t worth it. Just play around and try to make things! Also, I don’t know if you are using the Mac version or…[Read more]

I agree with Rory.
Each project, each tree type, each tree size – caliper and/or height (crown as well as trunk), have their right of existence, usage, and aesthetics.
Streetscape trees with a clear trunk height of just 3 to 4 m and small caliper with tree grate look much bigger with the proper stakes designed and installed.
Trees with shallow r…[Read more] -

Burcu,
All systems have positives and negatives.
Above ground systems using stakes and guy wires can cause trunk damage if not attached correctly and removed as well as are unappealing. Also, we have to assume that the contractor will continue the maintenance and removal of the stake and guy wires after the site is turned over to the owner. Though…[Read more] - Load More
