It’s natural to want to get a license early in life, but the whole point of experience is to have it AFTER training….although some states will give partial credit for undergrad job experience. I was on a state board and new grads were always “pushing” for early admission to the exam, but it’s not just an academic training issue. There is value…[Read more]

Any writing, especially short 1~2 page essays / project descriptions; I generally write a couple paragraphs/project in my portfolio for that purpose (I was a history major in undergrad so there really wasn’t a need for longer samples).
Technical writing class in engineering school covered was proposals, project profiles, memorandums (internal to…[Read more] -

ok… i’m not entirely sure what ‘modern pavement’ is, but the patterns on the bolduc site are available on cgtextures ‘BrickOldMixedSize’ – modern to me is more bond layout than ashlar. One option may be to get a manufacturer to give you a texture file that you can then created tile-able images from (cgtextures tiled images are only about 600…[Read more]

this has been somewhat an aggravating experience because of the conflicting arguments that i have been receiving. What we need is something like what NCARB offers for the architects.

So I just spoke to the Department of Professional License for the state of Virginia and they said that yes three years of internship must be completed prior to sitting for the exams.
I also spoke to CLARB and they said that I first need to satisfy any state regulations and than contact them to proceed further with license. -

I think sketchup comes with an ashlar pattern. You can just grab that from the file and use it in photoshop.

I believe that you can start taking the exams while in school in VA.
CLARB registration is required for the exams as of late.
If you have questions I would ask your local ASLA chapter. -

Don’t worry about contacting any States, go straight to CLARB to start the process…..they will tell you the same. It is a National Exam that everyone has to take in order to be licensed.
Some states require 1, 2 or 3 years, but you should be able with the proper qualifications, recommendations, transcripts, etc. It will take time to fu…[Read more] -

Awesome Walter. Thank you for the advice!
Do you happened to know off the top of your head if I can begin taking my exams immediately or I need to complete the three years of internship prior to sitting for the exams? I called DPOR this morning and waiting to hear back. Thanks again

I would stronlgy advise to sign up with CLARB. The licensing process is a national one and you are required to take the L.A.R.E. offered twice a year and administered by CLARB. CLARB is a licensure database and maintains your records with annual updates.
To get licensure in VA, you have to pass the LARE, then apply. In VA it is only a Cer…[Read more] -

Ultimately, the bulk of landscape architecture is design on the land. That come from an artistic and aesthetic driven mind, or a thought process more centered on how people use space, it can be ecologically driven, …., we can go on and on. One thing that almost always has to be part of the mix is the ability to transform what drives the des…[Read more]

http://www.cgtextures.com has always helped me find textures I’m looking for. As far as implementing them in a photoshop rendering, I would suggest separating into layers and then changing that layer blend mode to something like overlay and multiply, and then lowering the opacity as you see fit. You would of course need base color layers beneath them for…[Read more]

When I first graduated and was looking for writing samples, I pulled from a couple of sources depending on whether they gave any kind of example as to what they were looking for. I wrote a tech column for the campus paper one semester, had the pro-practice proposal Wyatt mentions, some narrative/description documentation from various projects…[Read more]

Yes, I have a major thesis paper and professional practice proposal writing under my belt. What I don’t have is experience taking a technical writing class. If the latter would suffice, then I believe I will be ok with using that material as part of my application.
Thanks for clearing that up! -

Jay, Not sure where you got the Permaloc prices, but Permaloc’s edging tends to be equal or less than steel. Especially for residential. Call the Permaloc offices and they should help you out.
