I would think work experience trumps the MUD, especially since you already have a BLA and (soon) MUP, there’s a point when paper (diplomas) has diminishing returns. Short of heading straight into academia, I’m not convinced another degree is the right path, unless the specific firms are heavy on alumni from particular programs. It’s been my i…[Read more]

You may want to enlighten us on why you want to do one / what you would like to do with one. There are a wide range of programs, each with pros/cons that will prepare you for different trajectories.

No problem, Craig. We know we are not the solution for every designer on every job. We just try to make the highest quality products for as many varied applications as we can, so when the designer does need edging, he knows where to turn.
Thanks for all of your valuable input to the discussion. -

Craig, I hear you about the natural deep edging being the best way to go and 99% of the time that’s my preference, however with this particular job (it’s a small job on a tight budget in Florida) the existing turf is not in the best condition. It’s St. Augustine that was put down years ago over poor soil conditions without an irrigation system.…[Read more]

Oh, now your talking turf species! Like the additional info Craig 🙂
Yes, stolons/rhizomes are a nightmare. So, be sure to specify a bunch grass like tall fescue, rye, or bluegrass (if you can grow them in your area). Stay away from bermuda and St. Augustine! -

I am finishing up the MUD program at Ball State University. It is run in downtown Indianapolis. It’s a year-long program, August-July. We run it through our College of Architecture and Planning, so you will have exposure to architecture, planning, and landscape architecture professors. It balances pushing creativity with what could happen in…[Read more]

Edging will also keep grass from growing into the bed area, as well as keep mulch from migrating into the grass. Everything in it’s place!

A quality edging will maintain the designer’s original intent. Each time a bed area is edged by hand the size and shape of the bed is altered by some degree. After years of hand maintenance the lines the designer originally drew won’t look the same.

Mulch and turf I can see working without edging, but rock could be a nightmare without edging.

I think after looking at the prices of PermaLoc I’ll be looking at steel edging instead. While I’m sure it’s a good product, I’m doing this on a budget and I think the look of steel will suffice. Hopefully installation isn’t too much more difficult.

Because it’s a rock bed and I’d like a cleaner, more well-defined edge for that particular bed. Plus it’s a homeowner doing self maintenance, not a commercial maintenance company coming in every week.

Thanks for the recommendation Daniel and Andrew! Are there any common installation mistakes with this product I should be aware of?

I had another meeting today where the flood zone is changing from contour 10 to contour 12. The slope also gets steeper between those two contours. Currently, there is no Coastal Bank because the slope within the flood zone is less than 10%, but it gets steeper between contour 10 and 12 making a Coastal Bank to elevation 12 and shifting from the…[Read more]

Aluminum is a much better product, overall than either plastic or steel. Aluminum won’t rust, rot, or breakdown. It is lightweight, flexible, easy to work with. It is safer, with a rounded bead on top and locking stakes.
Important to remember that all aluminum edging is not created equal though. Certain manufacturers make it to thin, and use o…[Read more] -

I went to Penn and had the person who is now the director of CCNY’s program as a professor there – Denise Hoffman-Brandt. I have sat in a few reviews over the years and know people who have graduated from the program. I think it’s solid – innovative research and programs, good faculty and good students. You should definitely consider it.

I’d vote for Permaloc over steel edging for a DIY project. I designed a friend’s garden and he installed it himself using Permaloc edging. It is light weight and extremely easy to assemble and install.
Steel edging is heavier and slightly more difficult to work with, but could also be installed by a DIYer. Though, I’d go with Permaloc for eas…[Read more] -
