This is all great information! The main reason that we decided to add Archicad to our consideration list is that one of our frequent architect partners uses Archicad. However, the local rep here has yet to make a compelling case for it’s ability to easily model terrain, plants etc and I’m having a really hard time finding online resources for i…[Read more]

Would love to give you a comparison between Vectorworks Landmark and Land FX as a user; however I never became fluent with Land FX.
This is in no way a very valid point but I personally like the way VW looks compared to Land FX. -

While you are right the dominant program is AutoCAD with 2014 there is even less issue with compatibility across programs or platforms for that matter. I use Vectorworks Landmark on a Mac Pro at my own practice and consult for another firm using it on Windows machines. We not only share files across different platforms but we work with architects…[Read more]

If you have that kind of diversity of projects it is likely that you are sharing files or at least getting files from a lot of different sources to work from. Why would it make sense to use anything other than what is most commonly used by those who you are sharing files with? Chances are that it will be AutoCAD.
Land FX won’t do anything harmful…[Read more] -

Land FX is relatively cheap and the way its set up joining data bases with drawings or projects, is like a time saving machine; the extra money you could make back quickly in time saved.
Would like to hear a comparison with Vectorworks from someone fluent in both. -

Hey David,
Jumping in kind of late in the discussion. You’ve already received a lot of great advice, so assuming you’re open to a little more – here are my two cents.
It is awesome that you have some demand for your work and expertise in architectural graphics. I wouldn’t worry about charging the right amount at this point. The ‘right’ am…[Read more] -

Hi Jay,
Great question. The contractors that I have worked with prefer working with the steel edging. It holds a nice, rigid line while remaining hidden. EverEdge, Col-Met, or Sure-Loc would do the trick.
If you go aluminum, then Permaloc is your go-to. They have a specific product called CleanLine that I believe will fit your design objecti…[Read more] -

I have used Archicad but it was for Urban Design. I found that the difficulty for me with the program was that there were few training resources and those that were available were geared towards architects.

Why use Archicad when you can use Vectorworks Landmark. I think it would be best for a firm like yours that has such a diverse range of projects.

thank you for posting this, tosh K, very interesting piece.
I just wish the writers would spend less time chasing vacuous golden oldies (‘the spirit of the place” !!oooh! How profound and novel – NOT) and more time just describing the designs. It is like they have forgotten how to review. I think a greater level of detail would be appropriate…[Read more] -

This is an awesome article. I especially like;
“Such challenges are likely to make the fine art of landscape architecture the most exclusive field of all for super collectors.”
Landscapes are not cheap that is for sure.

There are many beautiful Pennisetums but one must be careful in the tropics where some have become invasive pest species.
The grass in the first two links is not, I think, a Pennisetum. Flower seems all wrong. Perhaps a species of Calamagrostis? -

Here in Thailand you couldn’t find a single one up until roughly 5 yrs ago. Now the trend caught up and you see them everywhere. There is a new one popping-up every year or so. I believe the trend should spread with the same speed in the Philipines : seeing is believing.

I like these grasses, and in my books it was pictured as P. alopecuroides. But you made me doubt the book (local books not so trustworthy), I had to search the answer and turned to my favorite site: wikipedia.
Pennisetum alopecuroides actually looks like the grass in the first 2 links
Pennisetum setaceum should be the right one

Good eye, Rob !
It’s Pennisetum Alopecuroides, comes in clumps.
It’s red cousin is Pennisetum setaceum, cv. ‘Rubrum’ (same aspect, bronze red color)Both available in the US if I’m not mistaken.

Rob Halpern replied to the topic grass identification in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 12 years, 1 month ago
Appears to be a species of pennisetum. Perhaps one of the running species rather than the clumpers, but can’t tell for sure from phots
