Hello!
Thank you! I must agree with you – I talk about drawing our environment, not proposed projects. But I call it “drawing landscape architecture” since it is a object of our interest as landscape architects. I believe we need both skills: ability to represent our work and the baility to record our thoughts of our sorroundings through…[Read more] -

Yes, and it has been a contributing factor in getting employment interviews as well.
BD+C is building design and construction…the most common rating type, and ND is the new neighborhood development rating system, with is more of a planning thing. And sincs many LAs do a lot of planning, it would probably be the one to get. -

Not entirely true, Henry. While not a huge priority among LAs, LEED can be a great asset to have on your resume. It not only is relevant to architects, but to PEs, MEP engineers, and yes, LAs. At the VERY least, LAs should know what it is comprised of and how they fit into the puzzle. Not every LA practice will need to have a LEED-AP, but many…[Read more]

lol… certainly, I agree with you. I get what you mean. Ultimately it’s the attitude than credentials. The problem I have now is getting myself hired and often employers only looking for credentials. Sad.

thanks Henry. So it doesn’t require one to be physically practicing in US. That’s great.

Also, the curb radius is so small that they had to use paint to widen the implied island – you can look at it as taking away from the planting isle or taking away from potentially more parking spaces when added up throughout.
…. is that lawn in the island or weeds from lack of maintenance? That brings up the issue of filling beds with p…[Read more] -

My experience is similar to J. Robert’s, but 11 years lesser (’88 grad). At some point it becomes harder to land employment with others, though probably not impossible. Sometimes it’s the economy, other times bottom line (younger employees less $ to pay than older), and others it’s opportunity to go out on your own after some stimulus to do so (…[Read more]

Too large of a shrub blocking parking lot visibility…serious safety hazard.
That said, though, all the big SUV’s and pickup trucks do the same, coming from the owner of a Toyota Corolla in the land of the cowboy-outlaw: the desert southwest. But as LA’s, at least we can control the planting design, considering mature plant sizes instead of…[Read more] -

I agree with Andrew. Also, raised island prohibits opportunities for stormwater capture. Can’t see much but I notice when someone plans for pedestrians after they get out of their cars and doesn’t force them to walk down drive aisles to get to their destination.

Aside from the shrubbery completely blinding the drivers, it appears to be rather steep right to left in the parking spaces making doors fly open or slam shut (on fingers and legs) … hard to tell from a picture.

The planting is too high in the island. Drivers backing up lack proper visibility.

hmmm…
– I see no sign of real drainage on this sloped parking, but this could be due to the picture angle.
– Lighting does seem tricky though : looks like asymetrical lighting fixtures facing *away* from the parking lot. Actually facing perpendicularly, lighting half power on the cars, half on the garden. Are there any pedestrian…[Read more] -

The two offices I’ve worked at:
- I worked at a VERY small firm, with the Principal and one Associate LA. I joined as a co-op student to help with the Associate’s work load. I was a very friendly atmosphere and we all got along, had the same tastes in music, went out for fancy lunches when times were good, etc.
- My second firm was similar but…

It would depend on the position – larger firms sometimes will have ‘design principals’ who are more in charge of overall design than technical aspects (basically dividing the work up even at the senior levels). Hence you will occasionally find senior level people who are unlicensed.
In general having technical knowledge and project managing…[Read more] -

It’s interesting reading this blog and comments from different people with different background.
I wonder what would be the FUTURE outcome of an LA with minimal experience in construction detailing and tender documentation (approx 3 yrs), not getting enough technical experience, to move to a senior LA position in a large international…[Read more] - Load More
