Hi all
I have always used relative pathing. For me there has never been any benefit to using full pathing – BUT there has been a big disadvantage to using full pathing. Twice the companies I have worked for needed to migrate to a new server and everything was full pathed! It was quite a headache and very time consuming to sort through and change…[Read more] -

haha… I totally overlooked that! Dismissed them as condiment bottles. It appears the photographer was careful to hide the labels… way to go Jim Beam for thinking ahead!
Other than a great place to drink, I can’t see this becoming a trend like shipping containers. Though, its not a bad option for beating the rent in NYC. We’ll see if mor…[Read more]

Great article that slipped my attention before. I love citizens acting on their territories, in one word : guerrilla gardening.

Doesn’t this make an ideal ‘kill zone’ for the predators? Albeit no different than the ones that naturally exist, and perhaps more fair than the highway.

You have to be able to understand how Plans specifications and estimates work together to get what you want, or what the designer wants, and that includes a LOT of practical experience in construction, as well as the ability to follow a list of 500 points in something like a road profile, or a curve alignment, accurately, and I mean precisely…[Read more]

Recently I visited Jones and Jones in Seattle, WA with the UGA CED Land 4800/6800 West Coast Field Trip. Here is a project that they had completed that was successful:

great description of each LA tier!
I like your dad’s saying “if you can’t get it done in work hours, you don’t belong here” it’s a matter of managing your time effectively and knowing when to delegate work, of course there are exceptions to every rule. -

4th paragraph of story: this is another building operated by the same corporation (not the one I knew of in the earlier post which was in another city). Still, what a bad pattern.

Stephen,
In one of my most recent clients we found that if the staff was familiar with Illustrator or Indesign they liked the user interface better than AutoCAD and these individuals learned more quickly. The biggest challenge is the difference in use of the command line in AutoCAD. If you are like me and you solely used the command prompts there…[Read more] -

Here is a link to the Vectorworks folks. They do free webinars on a regular basis. This link is for a VW Landmark Demo that should be a good look at the basics. If you join the newsletter, you also get free access to a wealth of past demos. Well worth the time.
Good luck.

Just buy a version or two older (in the case of AutoCAD the file version change is only every 3 yrs ’04, ’07, ’10, ’13; in Adobe’s case it differs), it seems like half the time I have to save down for a consultant anyway. And if the client is in Revit, they have to save out the files into AutoCAD anyway.
AutoCAD and Adobe have gone to…[Read more] -

Hey Robert
How much of a transition is this to VW? I am not that proficient in AutoCAD anyway and to be honest hate the programme so that would not be a big deal, i am very proficient in Sketchup and Photoshop though and i am thinking that if this VW is a 3d software it will make my sketchup skills obsolete!
Also how do you find working with Engi…[Read more] -

Steve,
Not sure if you feel you need to buy AutoCAD specifically or that’s what you are familiar with but I would suggest that you look into Vectorworks Landmark. As someone who started out on my own I evaluated all that you did and made the move away from AutoCAD and have been very happy with the results. VW Landmark gives you 3d along with site…[Read more] - Load More
