cool! Thanks, Andrew! Before I went to graduate school they wanted me to take some art classes, so I enrolled at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for a pre-arch. class – we did a tour of something like thirty ‘vest pocket parks of Manhattan” – starting of course with Paley Park..I kept the tour outline for years but then I lost it, which I will a…[Read more]

Depending on the size of the plan, I have different techniques. Like others have stated, if the plan is at a small scale and so are the plants, use a hatch pattern to indicate plant typw. Include a detail of how you want them planted (staggard or lined up), and let the contractor figure it out based on area. For larger plants or at a much larger…[Read more]

A good design problem for a class, indeed. Reminds me of what our friend, William H. Whyte once said:
“All things being equal, you can calculate that where pedestrian flows bisect a sittable place, that is where people will most likely sit. And it is not so perverse of them. It is by choice that they do so. If there is some congestion, it is an…[Read more] -

John,
The trend in the industry is towards more information, more accurate quantities, realtime cost take-offs, you name it. Firms are demanding it, clients are insisting on it. To tell a client you have no idea what the quantities are, and that they need to ask the contractor, inevitably means you will be value-engineering the project. I ju…[Read more] -

Maybe, but aren’t they all members of the licensure boards of 48 states plus few other jurisdictions? Shouldn’t that tell us something? And they do get a fair amount of volunteer time to help cover some of the costs.
In my experience they’ve been fine – I chose to take the ABCDE format in the last cycle it was offered, fully understanding the r…[Read more]

Hi;
It is good that American Nursery Journal is following the same line, I have seen some impressive designs with the freeway bridges incorporating large areas for animals and over species to make safe passage. This also helps bio-diversity in vast amounts. I look forward to reading the link,
Thank you so much Richard Kidger -

This recent article from American Nurseryman explores a similar approach:

That’s an idea. But, from what I gather, the problem is that CLARB will never allow another organization provide the same service. CLARB is the end-all be-all.

I now recall having to get two LAs to send something to me in a sealed envelope that I had to send in with my application to the state. That was a bit awkward and it would be more awkward 10 or 20 years later … if they still existed.

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Working over 40 hours? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 9 months ago
4,000 over 13 years is only 6 extra hours a week. I don’t find that too ridiculous, but I guess that some weeks were a lot more and some were a lot less.
I’ve only had 40 hour jobs as an LA except when I was apprenticing (for lack of a better word) when they put me on salary and then had me work 6 days at 10 hours each (taking advantage of the r…[Read more] -

Is there a reason that another organization can’t be put together to serve the same purpose as the Council Record??

What advice this is. I had to wait two years after I graduated to find my first real job in this profession. I found reading your advice helpful for a entry-level professional, like myself. Thank you for sharing.

While I agree a council record is very handy to have, it is just too expensive for the average LA to keep. When you add in the fees for the license, the application for the license, ASLA, etc. They charge BOTH to keep the record, AND to actually use it! In this day and age where mass data storage is cheap and simple, there is no good reason why it…[Read more]

There are reasons to do it and reasons not to. I don’t think anyone is telling anyone else what they should or should not do. The whole idea of discussion is to share our experiences and let people make their own decisions for themselves.
I think Craig is not only saying that it keeps the record for him, but he gave a great example of his…[Read more] -

Seriously. You made this comment. You have no meaningful reply, or nothing else to say? How about “I’m sorry for accusing you of wanting to “Fight”. Or yes I was wrong, I didn’t understand the situation that CLARB forces candidates to pay for a record… Come on man… Please don’t leave pointless dialect or comments on our discussion, please…
