Sounds like your hearts in the West and near family. Those are the places I would venture too. Nothing like having a support network to encourage you to get the ball rolling. I have seen a lot of job postings for LA’s in California, and most of these were not even posted on the ASLA website. Get to a location and focus on the market, start NET…[Read more]

I’ve always used relative. It’s more for my (our) benefit than anyone else’s, as it allows relocating/renaming a file/project without breaking xref links so long as you preserve the folder/path structure. It really depends on your file management practices. Bottom line, it doesn’t really matter unless you’re running into a problem on a re…[Read more]

I’ve heard great things about Austin, and I’ve applied to jobs there. I may even have friends from Shreveport, LA (where I grew up) that moved there. Up till now my rule about places like Austin has been that I’d move there if I got a job there. At this point, though, since no job offer is involved, I think I’d prefer to stay farther west.
I’ve c…[Read more] -

I agree to “move to where the food is” to borrow an old Sam Kinnison punchline.Unfortunately, many firms seem to be in a ‘local only’ hiring mode still. DC isn’t growing all that much job-wise, and is very instable still (I hear of occasional layoffs in the AEC inudstry to this day) and the market here is very, very saturated with many, many,…[Read more]

Hi Andrew,
The problem is there isn’t even much in the way of related fields to work in around here. The biggest nursery around here closed. I’ve been to all the places in town that work in related fields and none of them are hiring. I’ve even hung up a few signs advertising myself as a gardener/designer. I’ve spent the last year in Moscow…[Read more] -

Your next move does not have to be permanent. You might look for where there is growth in the things that you are most qualified and/or experienced in. This is a slow profession as career building is concerned. Patience is everything.
My understanding is that the area around DC has the most growth. You have to look for areas of growth and w…[Read more] -
Cameron R. Rodman replied to the topic What tools do you use to manage multiple social media accounts? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 12 years, 10 months ago
I use multiple accounts from Fb to twitter, tumblr, youtube, etc. I am still in the process of setting things up however. I have a squarespace website which I can feed updates from into each of these accounts. It works great. It even feeds over to my linked in account. I can post a blog on Squarespace and it goes everywhere at once.

The devil really is in the details. Unfortunately, with gov cuts (planning) and the rest of us working 60 hrs to make the same as the old 40, those with much to gain are taking the process over–changing the meaningful things and leaving the window dressing. Noble initiatives get morphed into faintly recognizable marketing tools.

Smart growth, obviously, is about more than density. I think the pattern of development may be more important. They need to make sure that even lower density developments are walkable and allow for mixed uses. Even people who want to live in lower density areas probably would appreciate the ability to walk and bike to meaningful destinations. The…[Read more]

Indeed, be prepared to do a lot of research to figure out some of the vocabulary; my only piece of advice is that understanding that a Brit is writing it can help crack some of the text.

I gotta say they’re doing quite well – they got more of the theory than the attitude out of corner’s writing 🙂
I do love Martha, learned a lot in the short internship I had there. -

Tosh, thank you for sharing your perspective on the portfolio aspect & for the book recommendations. I should probably start off with Rogers, but after reading the comments about Corner I’m eager for the challenge 🙂
