Ive always thought of aesthetic value as a means of fulfilling the innate human desire to ‘anthropmorphize’ our environment and the objects and spaces we occupy everyday. We do this in order to make sense of our world, establish a sense of comfort, and familiarity as well as for more practical reasons like wayfinding, landmarking.
This all ties…[Read more]

I never thought it would be easier, but it’s the only arrangement they’re offering; I’ll have to work with it if I want the experience. You’re right about the extra taxes; it’s something most people may not consider, but I’ve factored that in. I intend to set aside a certain percentage from each check to cover all taxes at the end of the y…[Read more]

I’m not the Andrew who runs Land8. I’m just a fequent visitor.
Sorry for using an example near and dear to you.
I have no arguement of whether green rooftops are beneficial to the environment or not. I just used it as an introduction to the subject of what I feel is a strange phenomena in Landscape Architecture – the need to come up with a higher…[Read more] -

I liked the weird climbing domes of what seemed like natural branch forms. I suppose they’re not rocket science to construct, but what about the dreaded “liabilities” as they age etc.?
Meanwhile here is a page on some fascinating water features that don’t quote price but I imagine are very expensive (also look at other uses in the overall…[Read more]

Just don’t stamp or sign anything and you’ll be fine. You, individually, aren’t liable nor responsible for any work that goes out of the office that doesn’t have your name, stamp or signature on it.

I suppose there are different ways of going about getting to any certain “goal”. As a few of my mentors have pointed out, a job is just a way to get your next job (unless you really happen to fall into your dream job right away. The questions to ask, in my mind, are “what can I learn from this position that I can build on” and “am I going to e…[Read more]

My project has not been constructed yet, but they have given me great samples and information. The designs I have seen built are high in quality. If your client is a more intense golf aficionado, their “Tou…[Read more] -

I’ve worked in a planning department and in teaching also, but if I think back and confine my answer to what I saw working in 2 very small LA firms and 2 medium sized architecture firms, along with being a consultant to a third in that category, here goes:
1) The amount of concentration on a type of project or client sought by the office…[Read more] -

3ds Max can be intimidating at first, but once you get the fundamentals it’s not so bad. A neat trick is to do the linwork in autocad, export it to 3dsmax, and extrude from there. All your lines need to be a boundaries (inclosed polylines) though for it to work . I would suggest purchasing videos on digitaltutors.com and thegnomonworkshop.com. I…[Read more]

Maybe they do still, but I don’t think so. I asked around when I was there, and no one mentioned a course on it. They had a basic course on CAD and sketchup and then another more advanced course taught by a fellow grad student, who knew how to get really great results with just CAD, sketchup and podium. There may have been other courses I didn’t h…[Read more]

I’ve seen the same job postings. They usually don’t say that this knowledge is required, but that they will give preference to candidates who know rhino,3ds max or similar programs. This sort of preference may be more common for multi-disciplinary firms that do a lot of architecture, so that candidates can work with the same software other…[Read more]

I graduated from Florida Internation University FIU – Our program was very visually / technologically driven from my perspective.
Rhino 3d was part of the curriculum while 3Ds became optional.
The use of Rhino became essential in our studio as a mode for the final product and representation. Sketching had now become that skill that allowed us to…[Read more] -
