Are you saying that you have to provide the methodology for how the tree is to be installed, or just a planting detail? The detail would be very similar to a container grown or b&b planting detail with the added note to remove the grate. My opinion is that if you supply the methodology, you are taking on the liability of the installation. I would…[Read more]

That sounds like an interesting mix of work right now! I have a history of working in government and I like the fit for a variety of reasons. I currently work for my State governmnent doing air monitoring, and I like that I’m serving the public, the relative security and the insulation from the market (i.e. I don’t necessarily have to be…[Read more]

It is a Quercus agrifolia. Field grown and then put in a container – or box. The actual tree hasn’t been selected yet so I have no idea how long it has been in the box or will have been…It is for a client. The contractor is purchasing it. I am providing construction detail for installation. I am not responsible if it dies. I will…[Read more]

guy wires alone imo can be dangerous.
staking might be better, but only if the poles are in the undisturbed soil outside of the rootball and backfill. i’ve seen more tilted 2-staked trees that can never be righted. 3-stake trees are somewhat better long term.
the stake on container trees is there to lend strength to an undersized trunk with an o…[Read more] -

just a few questions…what kind of oak? is it a container grown tree or is it from removed from the ground? how long in the box? is it going in on fill? on cut? what kind of soil? what existed exactly where this tree is going?
is it for yourself? for a client? who found it? who purchases? who’s responsible when it dies? will access be available…[Read more] -

Robert, what interests you about municipal work?
I’ve only been in this position 3.5 months, so the list of completed works is not all that long. I currently have 2 projects under construction – a natural playground and a small retaining wall. The playground was designed by a consultant, but I came on board in time to handle bidding and…[Read more] -

Check the Outliner or the Components Browser; your block names should show up in both places if they actually were imported.
Try zoom extents. The geometry may be located very far from the origin. Did you check or uncheck retain original coordinates? -

I certainly appreciate Ms. Bloch’s point.
I have been very fortunate in my career to always have great doors open to me… almost without my even thinking about it. But in the current environment (which will not apparently change for landscape architects for some years), a new graduate must ask himself what “following his dream” is worth to him.…[Read more] -

Yes – looks like the same technology. Do you have any firsthand experience with these Toby? Wondering if they are as reliable as stakes and guy wires? Thanks!

I have no direct experience with that issue, but a quick search finds the following:

personally – i think you can lose the word portfolio. I think all that it requires is your name, date and course of study – the text should be small in my opinion

Hi Luke.
I’ve read the comments of others about not communicating Landscape Architecture. It spoke to me. I’m a licensed Landscape Architect. I would love to receive that portfolio on my desk and would be curious about the mind of the person who thought to do something a-typical and who had an artful eye. What kind of firm do you want to work…[Read more]

Interesting that you’re running across Vectorworks in job postings. I haven’t seen so much of that, whereas I’m not sure I’ve seen one yet that didn’t have SketchUp on the list. Depending on if you need a smooth terrain or stepped, and (again) what level of the program you have access too, Sketchup can do terrain models fairly easily. See th…[Read more]

Yes, a lot of the other students are using SketchUp, but I intended to learn vectorworks anyway, because lots of offices use it and it is a condition to know it in many job advertisements. And I did not work with SketchUp as well. Is it easy to make a terrain model there? Because this is important, as our terrain is hilly and we need the right…[Read more]
