Thank you, Toby. Would you give me more on the “on-your-own issue” in regard to getting the stamp? I do fall into the need stamp asap category though millions isn’t exactly the amount of concern. How is the stamp issued? JB

The CSE results are provided at the check out process. You will be given a form to mail in to LATC to complete the process along with a pro-rated cost sheet for the amount you need to also send in.
The LATC seems to have moved to a mid-month processing day for everybody who has passed the test in the prior 4 weeks.
Yeah, so don’t bother rush…[Read more] -

Two that come to mind:

Also, on a visit to the San Francisco Zoo I saw that they were outfitting an area for the most simple of nature play. One spot had a pile of natural cut poles, maybe 3-4′ long. Kids would build tepees or bridges or whatever they could think of. No instruction,…[Read more]

Cool, Tanya, very interesting.
In my humble, one thing that makes for outdoor experiences is making the outdoors part of your daily path for activities, so you can’t avoid it.
For me, excercize is all about destination walking or biking – I like to have a reason to go somewhere, walking or biking, and the daily commute is vastly improved by being…[Read more] -

Hi There,
I’m about to take the CSE. Thanks all for you advice as posted here. I’m wondering upon passing, how long does it take to receive the actual stamp and to be able to use the title and practice?
Thanks – Jennifer -

See what you can find from Jeffrey L. Bruce. He’s a landscape architect based in Kansas City, Missouri. Turf management and soil engineering is a specialty of his. I believe he’s been featured in past issues of LAM. In fact, here is a list of publications on his company’s website: http://www.jlbruce.com/a_firm/publications/publications.htm

When I review a resume I am looking for real content to help me get a sense of the candidate. If there is a lot of fluff it gets things off on the wrong foot.
You can certainly communicate your willingness to travel in easier ways.
But showing that you have an eye for design is more difficult to convey.
Consider carefully what photo to include and…[Read more] -

Here’s a nearly opposite instance that what most of you are talking about – playgrounds in extremely rural areas – and I mean a gathering of 8 or 10 homes that is 60 miles from the nearest grocery store or gas station.
We are working on a project to bring a number of playgrounds to extremely rural areas in the middle of South Dakota. The kids in…[Read more] -

What is it you wish to communicate to a prospective employer with these pictures?

Luke,
If you do add the photography make sure it is artistic and or tells a story or gives you a way to introduce some of your other interests. Employers like to know that you have this as a skill, was probably more important back with analog cameras, but it will more often than not provide for a topic of conversation.
Best of luck to you in your…[Read more] -

This is a very good question to ask. I’m glad you took the initiative to find a place to ask it. I didn’t know about these websites until after I started my MLA.
After going to school for a while, I think I would have liked to know the following:
– Does the program require you to do a thesis in order to graduate? A thesis can be a semester or a…[Read more] -

Portfolios and Resumes – Design Strategies 13 years, 3 months agoIf possible Luke, I would recommend travel sketches over travel photography. I find sketching to be a more sought after, rare skill. Furthermore, sketches reveal more about what you are looking at and how you interpret a scene. I’ve brought personal sketchbooks to interviews that demonstrate the range of activities I do, where I’ve been, and my…[Read more]

Each district is run separately w/ some Sacto oversight for establishing standards. While the work env is not hostile to LAs, there is a definite division of work that leaves […] wanting more. Others I work with are either fine with how it is, or just won’t say anything about it.
If given the choice, put in for the areas you could live in and…[Read more] -

Yeah, I kind of wondered if that was the case. The work I see from Caltrans seems to vary a lot, some nice design but a lot of engineering influence ; )
Do you know which of the Bay Area districts might have a more LA-friendly environment?

Take the test.
The plus side of working for the state is a steady pay and benefits. You will even get reimbursed (partial for prep classes, full on the tests) for obtaining the LA license.
Just understand that Caltrans is run by a bunch of engineers. And as such, they don’t let go of much of the ADA, grading within LS areas, or stormwa…[Read more] - Load More
