Good advice, I think. Just start drawing and one thing will lead to another.
Also: design does not arise out of divine inspiration from nowhere. It must grow out of the conditions of the site, the functions the site must accommodate and augment, the budget, and any vision the client came with. When the “juices aren’t flowing” (ick!) start with the…[Read more] -

I agree that, ‘Do whatever you want’ is about the worst. I’ve also never visited the site for two projects, except by Google, and I’ve given a retainer back on a job early in my career. Writing that check was actually a relief.

My father taught me something a long time ago. If you get stuck in a design, just do something and as you work off of it, new ideas present themselves …. even if you wind up undoing what you did when you were stuck.
That was consistent with what he’d say if I were driving and came to a stop sign and ask him “which way?”. He’d say, in his…[Read more] -

We have used the Live Roof Trays before and are quite happy with them. Have not tried turf however. The live roof trays work really well on smaller roofs where you just want an easy system installed and are more for looks. On bigger roofs with more active use it is nice to have a little more flexibility that you can get with an intensive green roof system.

If possible, I go back over my notes from the client and analysis of the site. What always frustrated me was having a client say, “Meh, do whatever you want.” or not being able to visit the site. Remind yourself that not every project has to be something revolutionary. You can always recycle ideas or find something in your sketchbook that you drew…[Read more]

Hi Jordan,
I spoke with a professor at Rutgers – and ended up adjusting the layout – to provide an
even 6″ of soil depth. I havent finalized the species of Turf Grass though but I did narrow it down to a fescue mix (hard, fine, creeping and red).I did happen to speak with the rep at Liveroof about the Bella Bluegrass – they offer it in their…[Read more]

On the other hand, businesses can’t ignore the importance of Search Engine Optimization. And for that, text speaks louder than words. I think it would be worth if for members of your company to write informative articles for posting at the least. You have to also talk up the profession.

Great Ideas guys, thanks!
I notice a running theme- heavy on the imagery, light on the text. It works for our profession I think- draws the viewer in, intrigues them… website as storefront window- lots of dressing and display. It takes extra clicks to walk in and figure out the details of the product. -

Guleph! 13 years, 4 months agoMany of us are planning or in the process of taking LARE exams. I am interested in starting a group that would help people like us prepare for these exams–there are so many prep courses offered in the United States, but , to my knowledge we Canadians are limited in this regard. Ours… when i’m done with it, j/k. Adobe Muse has made it much easier to build your own. I must say that the gap between the large screens firms use in house and tablet presentations makes it a tad more difficult than five years ago.
There seems to be two schools of thought on scrolling vs no scrolling; some try to keep everything visible on a…[Read more] -

These are all great suggestions. Many firms are going towards BIM (Revit) and Civil 3D which there are courses in. Also if you already are a wiz at Sketchup, I’d look in to rendering programs and render some of your old projects from your portfolio. If you could get some sort of certificate or credible experience with those programs, I would…[Read more]

I would call your local zoning or building permit official, usually with a city or county. They are the ones that you would need to get permits from so they will know the local requirements.

I recently received my master’s in LA after my B.S. in Planning, and am having some trouble as well finding a job. I would agree that you should not go back to get your masters if you already have a Bachelors in LA. If you do go back for something different, in my program we took many courses and learned many of the same things that undergrads…[Read more]

I’ll echo a lot of what’s been said – get a job in anything related to LA (planning, CAD work, nursery, HomeDepot, landscaping) or really anything. Showing a good work ethic, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines is a big part of an entry level expectation; also showing some humility in taking odd jobs can be good too (a lot of hubris is…[Read more]
