Unless the municipality is requiring retention/detention ponds, or stormwater treatment of surface contaminants, you’ll be on the losing end of the arguement for quite a while.
You might also talk to the bosses – they may be quietly pushing the engineers back to the lowest liability solution. Construction costs and long term maintenance are no…[Read more] -

Agreed, messing with the slab when you don’t have to is the better way. You will need some sort of spacer which could be a could be a solid concrete block in the same dimension of the paver, and you simply glue a paver on top using masonry adhesive so it matches. Then glue the spacer block onto the slab using the same masonry adhesive (go for one…[Read more]

You better find out if those slabs are pre/post stressed and if the cable cells are grout filled, or if the whole thing is just rebar’d. Something might go bang in a really bad way if someone drills into the structural slab where they aren’t supposed to.
It might be better to pour a floating slab (think anchor weight) and attach to that.

Wuzhen Ancient Watertown in Zhejiang Province, China, dubbed as “Venice of the East”.
One of the best, if not the best preserved ancient watertowns in the world, in my opinion.
If one’s from an urban area, this is indeed the perfect getaway. Quaint, mystical and effortlessly romantic. -

I wish I get to visit it often. I haven’t been for about 10 years. Living in Las Vegas, Boston isn’t exactly close. But if I can swing it, hopefully I will be there later this year for the ASLA Conference. Thanks for the picture!

Hi Boilerplater, I just clicked on that link and it worked. I’m not trying to mimic the job of ASLA, just was a little inspired by the lecture I went to and wanted to spread the word.

3 reasons why I like la
1. We work with nature and sometimes solve complex environmental issues
2. We create outdoor public space, think of Bryant Park in NYC, or the Highline
3. We work at many scales from small gardens to large masterplans -

I suggest touring a few different firms. Each business is ran differently, so you can get a skewed perspective if you only visit one. What you ask is not a simple question, there are so many variables that go with it. I will tell you what convinced me to change, was seeing a project where kids were involved, and see their faces when they saw their…[Read more]

How rewarding any given profession is depends on how much you love the profession outside of cash.
I personally loved the outdoors before even knowing what landscape architecture was. I was drawn more towards the garden articles of lifestyle magazines like Better Home & Gardens vs the articles on interiors.I definitely loved the plant aspect;…[Read more]

Changed my major 3 times before I found Landscape Architecture. I love it but the best thing you can do while exploring all your options is know that it is okay to change your mind. College is a path and sometimes you take a turn you never even new was an option.

I think it’s also largely due to the media. Whenever a new building goes up you’ll read paragraphs about the architect who designed it.
Whenever a new park goes up (that is also groundbreaking and spectacular and unique), there is no mention of the landscape architect. It’s usually credited to the city, as if it magically appeared t…[Read more]

I think it’s mainly the numbers–we are a tiny profession. Also, most of us can’t say what we do in one sentence.

My belief through experience in dealing with many of both professions is that there is a major difference between how most of the successful people in each of the two fields are wired. Depending of which type of “wiring” you have, the better you’ll feel in one profession or the other.
Architects are in a design field where they are in control…[Read more] -

I would highly suggest you contact a local LA and Arch office and tell them you are a student exploring career options and ask them if you could visit their office during lunch or after hours (not to eat in to billable time) to discuss the profession. Some areas have an organized ‘job shadow’ usualy arranged by the local ASLA or AIA chapter. You…[Read more]
