I was in Vegas also, for almost 5 years, and I have to agree, there is a lot of stupid there. Not a lot of awareness of ecology or of culture in general. I found that the reason they like to have those concrete-lined channels is to move the water along quickly without a lot of infiltration or evaporation loss to get it into Lake Mead. The wa…[Read more]

Bryan Bailey replied to the topic Landscape Architecture Vs. Architecture in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
Michael,
I would start by asking yourself a different question. What do you enjoy most in life and what are the things you are naturally good at? If you enjoy strolling the park and find yourself sketching landscapes and waterfalls and loving it – then you might want to pursue Landscape Architecture. That’s what I did. And I enjoy being a Land…[Read more] -

I would have to agree Alan. There is such a thing as over designing. Sometimes, nature has her design, and it’s up to us to know when to step aside and let her go.
Thanks for your input! -

Not to design is a design decision.
Most designers do not know when to stop . -

My favorite part on the Guidelines and Instructions……..
“Consideration will be given to appropriateness of the design at maturity, not at installation”
…..so many designers never take mature size into consideration. Does it really matter anyway? The maintenance guy can always use gas shears on them!

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Billable Items – Color Prints in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 5 months ago
I’m not going to bill someone for a letter sized print of anything. Sometimes when you are in doubt, ask yourself how you would feel if you got billed for the same item coming from someone else. Some people will not bat an eyelid, but little things like that can damage how you are perceived by a client or two that really does not make it worth…[Read more]

Learning the plants is, of course, essential.
But so is learning the vagaries of Florida micro-climates. Plants that will grow in Miami might not survive 75 mile inland.
A course would help you discern such differences. -
Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Why hasn't anyone heard of landscape architecture? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
What is important is that people who need us know who we are. The fact that a person knows who we are does not create a need for our services. There is so much diversity within our profession that there is no prototype “landscape architect” which makes it very hard to have a standard identity.
There is a great deal of diversity in the p…[Read more] -

Hi Jim, just thought I’d let you know that we are hosting the nation’s first ever NATIVE PLANT SHOW, an all native plant tradeshow, April 4-5, 2013 in Kissimmee and we have CEU courses covering South Florida indigenous plants and will have a huge collection of plants for you to see and talk with growers. http://www.nativeplantshow.com

I think it’s more because of the work we produce. In my opinion we are care less about breaking norms thus we produce more generic designs. In my office I hear too much “this will be nice and comfortable for people”… boooooorrringggg. We need more projects and designers like Seattle’s Freeway Park by Halprin, or the Highline by JCFO in order t…[Read more]

Thanks for the response! So it sounds like my BLA would be the same as the 3year degree? And therefore, I wouldn’t qualify for a job requiring post grad. The reason I was looking at the U.K. was because I saw a posting through a large international firm that had an opening in the U.K. but not in the U.S. A few months ago I looked up jobs in…[Read more]

The UK government is aggressively trying to reduce the number of international workers in the UK, and while there are jobs in London, it would be very difficult to get a visa. Basically UK firms (even the big ones) will take a less experienced brit because right now it is too expensive and time consuming to get a higher qualified foreigner. But…[Read more]

Hello, In the UK you study for a 3 yr batchelors degree, then you have a year out (in theory, if you manage to get a job) and then go back for your post grad. Once you have done the 4 yrs of study you work for 2 yrs in an office and then you can become chartered LA after passing an exam (LARE possibly). There is no work there right now i dont…[Read more]

Yeah two very different professions, i see LA as being a design job where you can really use your imagination, your art skills and your passion for the outdoors. Engineering is not a creative job in the same way as LA is and is about as far from LA as you can get in my opinion. If i were you i would look for a course in LA that is 4 yrs, 5 yrs i…[Read more]
