Frist of all, I think Bruce Ferguson doesn’t get quoted enough.
I’d like to suggest that the issue in Vegas needs to be considered holistically. How can the dumb-*##es in the city’s CE dept not concern themselves with the effects their decision is having on Lake Mead’s ecology? Do they think they live in a bubble?
Also, consider the arr…[Read more] -

Unfortunately for me, I didn’t have the same resources (internet) for help to these kind of questions 13 years ago as you do now. Yahoo was still an infant and Google was slowly being conceived in a Stanford University computer science lab. If you have ANY second guessing of this profession, get out while you can! Getting a 4 year degree in…[Read more]

Look who showed up and out from the forest…The kid from NYC! I’m an “LA” doing “Planning” related jobs. Landscape architecture has been phased out; it no longer exist. I hope you have a Plan B and job skills are flexible for a smooth transition to another profession.

Don’t try to be a designer on the Design Section of the LARE.

I think clients tend to be influenced by trends, even if the designer they hire is not, right?. What can you do then? Obviously, you can’t argue with them.

You two, Henry and craig, contradicted each other – one says people design by trends, the other (Henry) says we don’t design by trends.
I am looking at the question more from a historical perspective. I think the use of granite and infinite edge pools falls below the category of trend, I would call it more a fad. I think the question makes me…[Read more] -

Ice forces are quite amazing. I would suggest that you will probably need specialized engineering to ensure the longevity of your installation.
Check out Harriet Island in St. Paul. In addition to ice, the design reacts to huge fluctuations in water level.http://www.aerial-xp.com/vr_flash/st_paul_riverfront/node_d.html

Check the lakewalk in Duluth, MN. Giant sheets of lake ice pile up against the shore there, so I think they used a particular design strategy that dealt with that. I think they also used Ipe or some other tropical hardwood that has weathered very well. No handrails or guardrails. Similar in harsh weather and very active ice.
Still could be helpful…[Read more] -

Jason did a good job with the nerdy stuff (haha Jason) and here’s the touchy feely…Find out what print shop local designers use and go to that one.
For full bleed 11×17’s they tell us to make the print size a little bigger than 11×17 , equal on all sides, say 1/4″, and they trim them correctly. We can leave the crop marks or not – they do it…[Read more] -

I use a local copy house, like a Kinkos, but with with much better laser equipment and good paper for my portfolio slicks. I don’t mind the white band around the outside as long as its even. I’m lucky to have such a good shop nearby instead of being stuck with just a Kinkos. Even still, their good equipment was broken one day, and they ran a te…[Read more]

Thanks Jason, I always appreciate your very informative posts. I think you cleared up quite a bit for me. I haven’t yet picked out a new print shop (wasn’t happy with the service at my old one), but now I’ll be armed with better questions. Any advice on finding a good print shop?

First, what kind of technology is the shop using (laser, offset, digital offset, etc) and what is the shop capable of. Most copy/printing places now use high quality laser prints for short run printing. Digital offset is next (if you can find a place that has the machine), and offset is for when you are looking for several hundred to thousands of…[Read more]

Secter Environmental Design replied to the topic Have you seen the LA tee shirt w/ the stupid slogan? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
It seems to come from an attitude that landscape design is more than simply “making gardens,” and though the t-shirt’s messaging has a certain skewed perspective and an arrogant tone, I’m understanding it as an attempt to assert landscape design’s broader relevance in people’s lives and in daily culture.

I don’t think that is the point, henry, of thinking about ‘trends’. I geuss one could question whether there are ‘trends’ but there certainly used to be – the Bauhouse, the Impressionists, were all part of a group consciousness that reflected not only the history of thought on a particular topic, but the current state of the thinking process.…[Read more]

“To let nature take over?” There would be no need for design professionals. Sort of like the recent economy. Even the most naturalistic site needs some design input. When I worked in Vegas 9 years ago, we actually tossed around this idea once. The city wanted to do “something” with the channels and our design team tinkered with several ideas. We…[Read more]
