It’s so slow that I have seen no change in 40 years….thanks asla.
the public still have no clue and it appears that most of us don’t either.
define yourself and don’t wait for anyone else to do it for you is my advise.
after all, only you know what is is you do…. -

It’s odd to me how some LAs think they are over qualified to design some one’s garden. The truth of the matter is a fine scaled residential garden is like swiss watch. You are typically making the most of very limited space. If anything many LAs may be under-qualified to do it well. Its as if the King has no clothes. No wonder people have a ske…[Read more]

At Roland: We do try and do that too. Our landscapes for the most part are desert adaptive so that does help in water conservation. Thanks for the great feedback, I will keep that in mind with the next project. We actually just finished a project where we did this exact same thing!
At Jason T. Radice: I would like to try and use grey water for…[Read more] -

The poinf of harvesting is to use that water for another purpose, be it irrigation or for use as grey water for toilets and such. You can’t do that with infiltration. In water sensitive areas, the water you may collect for your use is akin to hoarding and can be crucial for the public water supply and for hydro because it rains so infrequently. I…[Read more]

The easiest and best way to get around this, in my opinion, is to scrap the rain barrel idea and design landscapes to harvest the water directly with infiltration areas. You might have to modify the soil a bit to do this, but you will get less precious precipitation evaporating than you would in a rain barrel, especially if you cover the soil with…[Read more]

Actually they have. It is slow going don’t get me wrong. On their website they have the interactive site where you can learn more about the profession at http://www.asla.org/design/ Every April there is National Landscape Architecture Month. And at least here in Las Vegas, the landscape architecture community is always up to something. I am…[Read more]

I have come to find there aren’t simple answers when it comes to this profession, which is a good thing, I think. I have also come across where people don’t know what I do. Someone thought I was one of the laborers that hangs out in front of the nurseries!

My answer is simple. Architects design indoor spaces. Landscape architects design outdoor spaces.
However, I have designed several indoor atrium spaces in large buildings… so there goes the simplicity.

Try this…back in the early 70’s I learned to use prisma pencils then after you lay down the color with the pencil, take a q-tip and put some lighter fluid on it, then blend the pencil color with the q-tip.
It looks like watercolor when you finish….take a little practice but looks fantastic!!! give it a try…
works best on board…[Read more] -

I am addicted to walled gardens. I love the possiblities of wall design, gate design, and I love the enclosed space feel. With little trickling water and wet places, of course.

If I had my own place, I’d probably want it to be like the first place I worked. My boss lived above the office on a large property next to the Truckee River. Most of the plants were edible. There were lots of interesting spaces and art work. I’d definitely want a cob oven to cook pizzas in. I miss lunch breaks in summer, when I could just go…[Read more]

I use to use Sketch Up while I was in school. Personally hated it. You can create a basemap in autocad, and if all your spaces are solid polylines you can easily extrude them in 3ds Max using the extrude modifier. Saves a lot of time. I’ve been using this method ever since. You can also model in Autocad 3d and then import the model in 3ds Max for…[Read more]
