Interesting discussion and I agree with your premise. As a professor how teaches both traditional and digital illustration technique (as well as the best of both worlds…hybrid techniques), I “walk and talk” what I teach. I demonstrate every technique for my students be it traditional or digital. Not everyone does, there are certainly many wh…[Read more]

I hope schools keep graduating talkers. That is all.

With all the vapors eminating from fresh bluelines (ammonia), AD markers, sharpies, and spray adhesive, I’m sure I’ve lost chunks of my expensive education.

I can also vouch for OSU, at least during my time there. My graphics classes were taught by Yumin Li, and I had Norman Booth for a studio entitled “Human Factors in Design” (Prof. Booth was capable of offering advice on representation topics from hand-drawn graphics and clay models to file management for InDesign documents). There were, of course,…[Read more]

Resilience, to me, is the rate at which a system returns to its normal steady state following perturbation. The concept is complex, and has as much to do with the ability of a system to return to a normal state and whether that should be expected in dynamic environments. For your dissertation, a good reference might b…[Read more]

Thanks Travis and you my friend are in the PNG category for me. Me, a ‘talker’ on a discussion forum, ‘magine that.

Ah yes, rendering parties. I’ve done way to many of those at the last minute. They became almost intolerable with so many fresh Chartpack AD markers open in a small space. Then we switched to Prismas and you could legally drive home again afterwards.

I’m just going to automatically place you in the “talker” category.

A question that asks “how to communicate an idea visually” and brings up ‘by drawing’ as the only answer is perhaps a bit narrow and I believe the real question deserves a broader answer.

This is coming from someone who doesn’t need or use anything in that area, but I have some handwritten notes from a seminar about using software in the landscape business I’ll pass along. Pardon if there are misspellings and you’ll need to investigate them further (or maybe this will get some others to comment thumbs up or down):

I think I understand it a bit better now and I guess the damage seen to be done by the likes of Sandy makes your thesis topical. I think designing and building for this kind of eventuality offers two alternatives: either to construct to resist or to ‘go with the flow’, in other words to make buildings that are easy to put back together if damaged.…[Read more]

I am unfamiliar with this usage so I will check out the web site in your post. I am interested in what may be the difference between this theory and that of sustainability so I will check in later.

Hi Anthony, thanks for your reply. I was deliberately leaving it open to interpretation to try and determine how familiar people in the industry are with Resilience theory, particularly in relation to ecological resilience and Social Ecological Systems. My dissertation is arguing that it is currently a very misunderstood or unfamiliar concept a…[Read more]

Presumably your dissertation is a little more complex than the information provided here but having a stab at a context you don’t provide I would say that ‘resilience’ is the ability to deal with failure or rejection. Not every project you pitch will result in accolades or even success and maintaining your professional integrity may be a challenge…[Read more]

I remember when I was a young intern there would be 4 of us sitting at a table coloring a siteplan. It took us a couple of hours to finish and we still had to scan it and touch it up in PS. Now, you can have one person do that kind of work at the same amount of time in PS. Of course the “style” between hand and digital work is different, but in…[Read more]

Something that I have noticed not to unsimilar to your point is the emphasis on the digital tools rather than the outcome. Understand that the market is requesting students that are proficient in CAD and 3D work right out of the gate, but this proficiency often comes at the cost of learning sound and practical design. They are teaching the tools,…[Read more]
