I graduated in ’09. Took some down time, took a few months to get an entry level job (with 5 yrs of experience in site engineering), got laid off for a year. I’ve been working now at another firm for just over a year. Most of my peers are in landscape architecture- we got out as firms on the coasts needed to hire entry level for work that is trickling in.

I have given up all hope for this profession after being laid off (I am a registered LA with over a decade of experience). Maybe if you are in your 20’s and naive, you can have fun in this field but once you start to settle down, buy a house, have kids, you quickly realize that landscape architecture is not a sustainable career path (unless…[Read more]

Not to white-knight for ASLA or anything, but they did do at least a couple of things to try to help members. There was a dues-relief program for at least a couple of years (not sure how long it lasted) during which they waived annual dues entirely for members facing ‘economic hardship’. They also eliminated fees for posting your resume on the s…[Read more]

Jason:
I share your commendation of AIA. I also am personally and professionally aware of the outreach efforts that they extended to their membership and beyond during the first couple of years of this never-ending downturn. I was in the Pacific Northwest at that time. After getting the axe in the third quarter of 2009, I took advantage of the…[Read more]

I went to San Diego when the ASLA conference was there last year, so it’s not in my plans again…but I will be passing through cities between (and including) Los Angeles and Vancouver!

if your using 3ds, import your autocad lines into 3ds. then, hopefully, your topo lines are saved in different layers, but your click on each one and hit w, this allows you to move your line in any direction. on the bottom of the screen youll see 3 little boxes labeled x,y, and z, respectively. here you will set your height of topo line to your…[Read more]

I am going to stand by my original statement and the first comment made to this thread…”My opinion is that this is not the place for this subject.”
I was not the least bit surprised by the route the thread took. It was typical of any forum that begins with a ‘loaded’ question: it went off route. I would say that behavior here was typical of wh…[Read more] -

I commend the AIA on how they have acknowledged, tracked, reported on, and tried to help with the recession. I think they have done all that they can to keep their members and non-members alike very informed on just what is going on the AEC industry. Every month, they release an easy to follow and accurate set of statistics in the form of the…[Read more]

I will be brief and to the point here.
Land8Lounge does not have moderators for its discussion topics here. Other allied websites (Cyburbia being the best example) have overall forum moderators and codes of conduct. If you post one here at Land8Lounge, you’re the self-appointed moderator.
As a few of you have warned, this forum topic sh…[Read more]

That still doesn’t prove that union contributions exceed GOP donor contributions – Sheldon Adelson alone bankrolled Gingrich’s entire bid for the presidency this time. The numbers don’t compare. And yes, it may be nice for you to see your congressman, but it would be nice if they could treat each other like humans, and I think this sleeping in…[Read more]

Unions were the largest anonymous donors? Where does that come from? I call BS on that.
The trouble with this kind of stuff is that most people really can’t hear the opposing viewpoints, and don’t want to. The fact that there has not been one documented case of voter fraud, but systemic voter supression efforts on the part of the GOP will not…[Read more] -

The prob. this year is that the GOP just does not have a charismatic candidate. Bummer. In a system built on compromise you just can’t have the perfect candidate.
