Jason:
Your comments made me re-read that “resume” advice I posted to begin with. At second and third look, particularly based on what you have added here, that advice would be best taken and applied to the cover letter. If you could cover that kind of ground in a cover letter (no way it could be one page) and do it masterfully, you would…[Read more] -

I actually think the focus now may be a COUNTER movement to the social media and internet based private living patterns (although business operations are another matter). Sure, if a park is going to have WiFi, it might be nice to include tables as well as park benches for laptop use etc. but the “Healthy Cities” movement is alive and growing, and…[Read more]

You should have at least a letter agreement for each project stating the scope of work and fee structure. Your professional liability insurer will want to to have a formal contract with a number of CYA clauses in it… You leave yourself ‘exposed’ without any type of agreement.

Getting there indeed! It looks great, I would still maybe work with the titles and perhaps the alignment of some images from page to page. But that is nitpicking, it looks wonderful

Akinyinka,
Great advice. Lots of really good things to consider. I appreciate it.Perhaps we can swap some art someday 😉

If I have applied and heard from them before, I always mention that in the opening paragraph of the cover letter to remind them that you had been previously selected and that you would like again to be considered for the latest posting. Also, I put the repost date when mentioning the position so they know you are not trying to harass them, only…[Read more]

Thanks. This system is pretty standardized and traditionalized through all manner of industries, but of course, the creative arts (of which LA is one) expect a bit more. My suggestions are not to say you cannot be creative with what you produce for an application, but it should contain a STRONG structure and logic to its organization, and don’t…[Read more]

Thank you for your excellent “on the ground” and more recent account of what HR people are really looking for and what matters in the first screening. We both know it is exceptionally rough out there, and getting through the first few minutes of initial screening, will determine if one even makes it into the “A” pile and will hear, in an…[Read more]

Agreed Chris.
Did anyone else learn to apply for a job BEFORE they attended college? Jeez. I’d bet half the habitual posters on archinect never had a paying job before (or sometimes after) earning their phd. If the hiring manager is going to ‘blacklist’ you for applying twice, you dont want to work there anyway.

You’re all making good points. I guess the reason I thought it was a bad idea to apply twice was that I read an article saying that they might blacklist you if you apply too often. Now that I really think about it, though, that doesn’t really seem like the sort of thing an LA firm would do.

Your portfolio reads so much better! **claps hands**Continuing the font throughout did wonders.(Change the height of your project title’s so that they read larger than the category title. They almost seem irrelevant. Are they relevant?)

Not applying to a job twice shouldn’t ever be an obvious thing unless you didn’t really want it in the first place. As landplanner said, any one of your questions could be a valid reason for a reposting, some more likely than others. I personally know of instances where:
a) they were set to hire and a major project/client fell apart taking the w…[Read more] -

I don’t know if this is ‘resume’ is lumped into the entire application package (resume/cover letter/work samples), but the general consensus from career HR professionals (I know a number of them personally) is just the opposite of this. The particular person who wrote what they look in this posting for is certainly an anomaly.
The above…[Read more] -

Great Post! Thanks for the information. I like to check the job postings on Archinect just to keep tabs on the industry but I will now go and look further into the site.
