Thanks for sharing – not an entirely new narrative among historians, but seems like a nice intro into the jarring WWs impact in design for the designer community.

If you have deeper pockets (not mac deep, though) you can look for what they are calling Ultrabooks. They are very thin and powerful laptops, similar to a Macbook Air, but with more functionality. I know Dell, Lenovo and Samsung make them, and I’m sure most other PC makers are or will make them. Prices on them shoudl be falling about now for…[Read more]

Hi Craig. Preceding the leaf suggestion you will find the reward recommendation which could be hard cash, a membership in a club or a brief occupation-related overseas junket that aspirants could select from the reward basket. But the leaf should still be there in the office hitting everybody in the face as a constant reminder of Pavlov do…[Read more]

Here is a bit of a twist with Kyle’s question, if not a MacBook Pro, then what PC laptop would meet or exceed the requirements? I too am a Student and on my final year and would love to get a PC laptop that will last me 4-5 yrs plus. but here is the kicker, desktop replacements are too heavy and battery life sucks so what are the professionals u…[Read more]

Hi again Craig,
The company I used to work for had three to four landscape install crews working on different projects similar to your company. Of course, they were all working within a 50 mile radius of each other. So, a bit easier on the coordination, etc. We also had a four person horticulture crew, which I was in charge of. Our crew did…[Read more] -

Hi. I am sure you know pretty well that landscaping, regardless of style or size, succeeds if it is designed and delivered not just with passion but also cared for thereon. Instead of expecting the TEAM LEADER ONLY to OWN UP the post-creation responsibility, I would seek a passionate volunteer from the project and reward the person for his/…[Read more]

Hi Ernst,
Thank you for your reply.
I guess it’s difficult to turn clients away, so instead one grows the business in order to be able to serve more and more clients… teething problems! One has to find the right staff and forge ahead!
Setting the tomorrow standard and slowing down is great advice.

Dear Craig,
I’d started reading the whole chain of ping-pong mails and in the long run gave up. The most important thing is in your introduction sentence “I run …”.
After that initial idea you got greedy. You started small, had done a great admirable job, wanted more, had to expand, got more people, more work, more hours, but you forgot to…[Read more] -

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the kind comments about our work!
Yep – I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head. I work insane hours and my work is my life… I am looking to find an assistant-type person who has an eye for detail and can help me spread my workload a bit… its Sunday and I was at work at 06h45 this morning… not good!

Honestly Pablo, at first glance of your portfolio, I thought you were straight out of school with no experience until I read your resume. No surprise to me you haven’t received any feedback. I’m offering tough, constructive criticism pep talk. No sense for rosy, pat-on-the-back, take it easy on you kind of approach. Not my style. Everyone here has…[Read more]

Having worked as a foreman for a medium sized landscape company I can attest that as soon as the crew leaders got enough experience and backing to start their own company, they did. If you are a good boss and a good man they will probably want to stick with you. However, they aren’t you. They won’t be able to necessarily see your vision. They…[Read more]

Hi Pablo,
I haven’t posted on this forum for awhile but I thought I’d respond to your post because resumes are kind of an area of interest for me. I’ve always struggled with how personal to get on a resume…there’s a fine line, depending on what you know about the firm/organization and what the vibe is if you’ve been in contact with them.…[Read more] -

Agreed. The ‘Objective’ heading and text seems a bit redundant for a professional level resume. We all know what the objective is…to get a job.

resume seems “light” considering the text in the cover letter…
I’ve seen folks list representative project/client&team/cost with responsibilities under employment, particularly for PM positions:
ABC Park
client: City of ABC
project budget: $1,500,000 (some indication of size)
-schematic design through construction administration as project…[Read more] -
