I like architects and their nerdiness, though they can be condescending at times, but it comes from their passion in design. I hate it when LA’s look down on people like them like we are somehow better.

Amany,
On one of the LinkedIn LA groups this week there was someone from a mideast civil firm looking for LA’s in Qatar. I believe the firm was Atkins.
Best of luck to you, Tom -

I just have a LinkedIn account right now, since I don’t have my own practice.
I think that if anybody wanted to tap into a “fan” relationship with their clients and have them do lots of “Likes” or whatever equivalent on other mediums, they’d have to be pretty high profile and have lots of built work. Or a TV reality show.
Either that or do…[Read more]

I just got a recommendation of sorts…so I’d say it makes an impact. As in business…connections…of a digital and different kind.

I’ve had a design posted on one by a client, but I don’t try to push that myself; I think there is some benefit of course in having a website/portfolio to refer people to, or a blog if you think you have enough ideas to keep it updated. But social media, not so sure. That would imply that clients want to know about each other, and why would they?…[Read more]

Owning your own design business isn’t impossible.
The big thing is whether or not people will pay for what you bring to the table. And if they can, you ARE in business.
I’ve come to the conclusion that what happens to the detriment of small design shops is that all the non-design work starts eating up the day. You spend more time chasing bits…[Read more]

I came across a similar question from the other side, the client side. It was a question posted to a gardener forum, where a home owner had just started looking into making their front yard and driveway better and was completely overwhelmed by all the different professions in the phonebook.
Landscaper. Landscape contractor. A person who’s been…[Read more]

I don’t think practice law is the main reason so many contractors give “free design”. I think they mistakenly believe it is an effective marketing tool. Trouble is, most people who get something for nothing believe it is worth exactly that.
Clients run the gamut–from those who want the most stuff as cheaply as they can get it, to those who wa…[Read more] -

On the contrary, there’s a huge difference between those two images – the second shows a great deal of jpeg artifacting from high levels of compression.
Looking at the first image being set to maximum, my first thought is it looks like a broken link in InDesign. When you link as opposed to insert an image it still places a small, low-resolution…[Read more] -

I have not posted in Land8 in some time but I found this to be of some interest to me. I think that what our Slovenian friend, aaVlaDoR, is asking about is the business concept of ‘Perceived value’.
I agree wholeheartedly with Andrew and others with one exception. I think the emphasis in this thread has been assigned to how we as practitioners…[Read more] -

I started this discussion because my seemingly simple dream of owning my own business seems to be increasingly fantasy. I may not be happy with my position now, and that doesn’t really matter. I just hope that there is hope out there for those of us that want to make it on our own. There is no limit to my dedication and hard work, however, it w…[Read more]

There are a lot of good comments here. I agree that it takes time with the right company to gain the knowledge and experience to branch out. I also agree that It does take time and resources to do things differently, even if the new methods will increase productivity and quality. The situation I am in is more of an unwillingness to explore (even…[Read more]

As you can see, it doesn’t make a different whether its low quality or maximum quality. I think the reason this is happening only when I convert it to an Interactive pdf is because it might have something to do with the fact that the original files are images. These are the original layers that I put together in Photoshop. I can’t remember what…[Read more]

On a related note….a few months ago I read an interesting article about a study done on college transfer/completion rates. One surprising find was that a significant number of college students were “transferring down” from 4-year bachelor’s programs to 2-year community college/trade type programs. This was typically done in junior y…[Read more] -
Chuck Byrd replied to the topic monochrome graphic presentation in the forum GRAPHICS 13 years, 11 months ago
There were several books out in the late 1970;s (Plan Graphics, Plan and Section Drawing, etc..) that showed many examples of monochrome graphics. Of course, it could have been that the drawings were originally in color, but the books presented them in “black and white.” Some were obviously monochrome, though. I remember doing projects in school…[Read more]
