That’s great news for you Heather! But, you do have one huge advantage: you and husband were a LA design build duo. One person doing this route solo, especially right out of school would find a more difficult time.
I can guarantee that a graduating nursing student will FIND employment before a landscape architecture one! By average in the long…[Read more] -

April, you are definitely dreaming!! How do you suppose of getting your license working with a non-licensed landscape contractor? If you think your schooling is teaching all you need to know about the design aspect of LA….then you are spending way too much time in Disneyland. Heed to Jason’s advice and comment.

You said it all, Jason! Students today simply DO NOT know what they’re getting themselves into…this roller coaster of a profession.

Jay, this is what I’ve been hollering and yelling out to students for the past 10 years!!! And I’ve been having this debate with Craig Anthony for months on end. Tell the students the hard truth. As students, you are the University’s clients. Those school projects are not realistic. In the real world, you don’t have countless hours to spend on a…[Read more]

There will not be one this spring. All of my other opportunities came through. The closest reviews I will be doing are Sections C and E in Denver, and Section C in Philly.
Maybe I can work something out in the fall.

Well, the design build market around where I hang my had is woefully oversaturated, and competition would be very tough. You have the large companies that have been doing it forever, you have the nurseries/garden centers that are well equipped, plus have access to their own plants since many here grow their own (they write off the design p…[Read more]

“A twenty four year old who has labored for a successful landscape contractor for five years is likely to be better prepared to run a landscape construction business than someone out of school.”
Bingo. Thanks for confirming my train of thought. This is exactly the type of person I’d want to partner up with: my design abilities + your knowledge o…[Read more] -

I started this process over a decade ago, set it aside (not the best decision I have made) while working in the public sector, and want to finish it now. The reports I am hearing about CLARB are not very encouraging. Thank you for your response and may you have a very fruitful career!

I think that the biggest negative about going straight into entreprenuership is that it isolates you. There is a reason that most states require an internship (besides exploiting recent grads). The alternative is like homeschooling yourself and expecting that the teacher is a legitimate mentor for the student while they are one in the same pe…[Read more]

Hi Susan,
I took the multiple choice exams first and then moved on to Sections E and finally C last December. If I remember correctly, the results of each test were posted no earlier and sometimes later than anticipated. It’s ironic that the most challenging thing I’ve ever done scholastically has been orchestrated by an organization that d…[Read more] -

Thanks, Craig. It feels great to be on the down-hill leg of getting my license. Still have the California test to pass, but I hear that is not as grueling.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Bollards vs. Dectable Warning Bands (California) in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years, 1 month ago
There is no other accomodation in the ADAAG other than truncated domes for detectable warning, that is pretty much the only thing in the ADAAG that does not have a substitue. Also, the DOT has adopted the 2′ deep truncated dome as the universal tactile warning device. There is no substitution.

Kim, rather than worrying about the job market, which may or may not be down by the time you get out, just make sure you know what you are getting into in terms of the profession itself. I don’t know what your exposure has been to the field thus far, so perhaps it goes without saying, but the majority of real life jobs in this field are nothing…[Read more]

I wish you could come and talk to our professional practice class about that! There needs to be a lot more education/support in BLA/MLA programs that would equip us to start our own businesses. The entire thrust of our class is geared around the typical path of “do p…[Read more] - Load More
