I couldn’t agree more Andrew. I received a BLA from Michigan State a few years back. I have always had trouble with an MLA student who has a background in a non-design related profession thinking they are “better” than you or I. I have trouble believing that their 3 years of education have prepared them better than my 5 year program.
With that…[Read more]

One of the differences between schools is that some principals in the profession prefer students from the school that they went to themselves or ones that they view as part of their group. If there is a presence of principals in the city that you want to work in, you may want to consider that.
I’ll second Dave’s caution of accumulating debt,…[Read more] -

Go to the cheapest program. Given the current opportunities within the profession, and really the overall fiscal payback for the profession, I would go cheap. You wont really learn landscape architecture in school anyway, just prepare for it. No need to break the bank (IMHO)
Its not a get rich profession, especially when you’re fresh.I had to move…[Read more] -

Hi David, first consider electronic format portfolios. It is very costly to keep printing and sending like the old days when I was in school. Deliver a hard copy on any interviews you go to. You can create your portfolio in PowerPoint initially and it is easily printable at a later date from a PDF file. I have also used MyPublisher.com to pri…[Read more]

You mean those iron meshes, right? If so it may be a cheap solution.
By the way we couldn’t convince the customer for green wall systems. so we will use that bamboo idea for them.
But I will keep all those suggestions in mind for future projects. -

Japanese stab binding is pretty nice, I haven’t used it but always plan to.

Field operations didn’t do the planting Piet Oudolf did that part. In the ‘New American’ landscape style developed by Oehme van Sweden; only its a gigantic intensive green roof.

I’m sure including the name Landscape Architecture in the title will not grab attention that the article deserves. The title should have read “Architects Are A Bunch of Thieves”. That should wake up the architects and the public to credit properly.

Timing will be important, the plant is a spring ephemeral.

I don’t have any personal experience with this plant, but the Plant Conservation Alliance through the NPS has some good information on their site, as well as some people to contact for help. http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/rafi1.htm
Good luck. -

Each type of vine climbs differently; some by twining(best with mesh), some with tendrils, and some with aerial roots. I like using mesh with vines that twine, since they are the easiest to control. They tend to stay on the areas with your mesh and will not cover your entire building.

I have found that some vines don’t like to climb wire. Maybe the coating shown Boilerplater’s system helps. Anyone else experienced this?

Sara,
We have done this many times. With a standard soil cloth, the incisions are dictated by the size of hole you need to dig to plant.
I would second many of the other comments. Soil cloth will not stop the soil from eroding underneath, so the plants you choose will need to do this job. And any ground cover which spreads from the root sho…[Read more] -

Well it took me until today to read this thread. Like most topics, there emerged some validity to both of the main “sides,” but I’m wondering if the overuse of Papyrus might have been a student problem more than a characteristic of professional plans seen? I plowed through a fair mountain of permit submissions from a lot of firms (granted, mostly…[Read more]

Sara,
I would be very careful in selecting what groundcovers to use if the future stabilization is to be left to them. Many groundcovers lack deep roots and with enough rain they will take the slope down with them. Others root deeply and can withstand more stress -
