Since when did this ‘Forum’ become a source for free advertising for Mike Lin’s Workshop? It’s really starting to get annoying.

Very interesting. In particular I thought that first case example they cited was an eye-opener, where the contract was “for a farmhouse renovation, when the stated objective of the architectural contract was to ‘create a sustainable green modern single family home.'” The question to me wasn’t who was responsible to obtain certification, as the a…[Read more]

Thanks, that’s a great help!
I will be there from 26 to Jan.3, and just going to sketch a lot there to study the projects. Plus, I am been thinking about the topic for thesis so hope I can find some inspiration from the trip. -
Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic The Unemployment Rate For Landscape Architects/Designers in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 4 months ago
How do we measure it? Supposedly 21% of us are self employed, 6% work for government, and 51% for “architectural, engineering, and related services”. Where the other 22% are seems a mystery.
Self employed people don’t show up in the unemployment line very often. They just tend to work a whole lot less and sometimes subsidize with a second jo…[Read more] -

Keith, There are other sources for NJ CEC’s. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in PA. has a Land Ethics Symposium that gives 5 CEU’s (at least the 2011 session did).

Katharine, I don’t think the show is based around the foundation that he is a practicing Landscape Architect. The base plot line for the show is that Rob has married a younger Hispanic girl and his process of trying to become part of the family. Rob just happens to be a Landscape Architect. Much like Ted Mosby in HIMYM.

Cheech Marin is in it as the father-in-law. Perhaps the great actor that was referenced. I’m disappointed that Cheech is not the LA in the show. Like Katharine, I would prefer an LA prototype that I can personally relate to.

I’m pretty sure the work truck will be revealed shortly after the pilot. I can’t wait for the episode where Rob’s character hires his illegal immigrant brothers-in-law to run his lawn maintenance crew. That’s the only way to get all the stereotypes that this show plays on out in the open.

I agree we would be yoked to the general planning/architecture area’s current and near-future fate, but I don’t know the best forecast for what that is. Reading the link however, I couldn’t help but notice music therapy being in such bad shape, when not long ago I had been on art therapy discussions (interested due to a relative in that field) and…[Read more]

Leslie:
I first thought that when I looked at your hyperlink to the “10 worst college majors” that you had found the one that has been circulating that I believe places architecture right at #1 for now given the beyond dismal employment prospects that show no signs of improving any immediate time soon.
My first response would have been if you…[Read more] -

Please note that I am in NJ. I understand it may be easy to get CEC’s in other states but the NJ Board of Architects accepts next to nothing outside of the annual meeting. They make it very difficult to even obtain information from the board on what alternatives I have to the meeting. It feels like they care more about making money than helping…[Read more]

Not directly any help on the main question but LA was not in the top troubled fields listed in this article (maybe we’re too small to be visible?):
