OWS is oftencompared to the Arab Spring. It has good intenions and it is against bad things. Many people are jumping on the band wagon to support being against something bad. The possibility of it having the power to destroy the status quo leaves open the question of whether that which replacesit is better or worse as it seems very possible to be…[Read more]

Agreed Craig! Another independent…and oh yes…we have our own business. Does that give my opinion more weight? 😛

Wanted to add I am fearful that someone is going to do something violent. But it isn’t OWS that I worry about. I have read plenty of propaganda online comparing the movement to communists and have the read the comments of individuals below asking when someone is going to “do something”, insinuating that protesters should have a meeting with their…[Read more]

Fines are still apart of government regulation…I see no difference in that. Want to push for campaign finance reform? Me too…that is why I am protesting. 🙂
In response to a previous post by I believe William…I am reading Adam Smith’s, The Wealth of Nations, and find it interesting that the economist that put forth the idea of free market…[Read more] -

Nice post, will have to look up the wired magazine. In Japan RR crossings blare out a distinctive sound, they’re everywhere and you here them almost constantly in the hum of the city. I’m not sure I’d want everything pinging constantly, but I suppose a universal device that can “activate” public amenities would make sense. Kind of similar to th…[Read more]

The Corps is your best source, if you can get them to open up; contemporary practice may be more difficult. McHarg might be interesting to look into. Robert E Lee’s service in the Corps may show some examples of what is now landscape architecture (both in war time Mexico and in peace time fortification repairs and the realigning of the flow of t…[Read more]

This is a perfect economic summary of what fuels the growing body that is the Occupy movement, thanks.
The power elite have desperately tried to tar the movement with a series of calumnies, branding protesters as hippies, anti-Semites, drug addicts, leftists, anarchists and communists. They have so far been unable to blunt the fundamental truth…[Read more] -

Walter Hood Assoc. presented some slides of his work that included a street upgrade in a talk I attended last month. I think he said it was Powell Street in San Francisco. In a quick look I couldn’t find any photos on the web but maybe that office could help you. I don’t know if you would say it was “resort” looking but he said they tried for a…[Read more]

Hello Hannah,
As a start to your research, I am wondering if you have done any of what Thomas above has suggested? That is to say, identifying where (and why) some failures might have occurred in the pre-earthquake landscape of Christchurch? I am working on a European Union project ‘Designing Safer Urban Spaces’ (http://www.desurbs.net) and we would like…[Read more] -

The wordy weight of the debate in this thread has become a little overbearing. I have contributed my fair share.
Time to lighten things up a bit. I offer this in that regard.

Russell ….good to see you here and your comments, while dripping with sarcasm, are also relevant and real. Many of the Big Shot firms from the states are already here or have alliances with Chinese firms (essentially a front to look more “indigenous”) but that also can be said for the Brits and Aussies.
How are things going for you in AZ (do I…[Read more] -

I would say that Mr. Madoff is reaping what he sowed right now don’t you think? He is likely to die in prison that in my opinion is far worse that shooting him. Losing ones freedom for the rest of your life is a pretty stiff penalty don’t you think?

I wonder if you have ever run a business Craig. Any business owner will tell you that they have fought hard to get where they are. There is a wealthy elite class and there are the wealthy on paper. By the time you add up all the commitments and responsibilities shouldered by many business owners they are not making as much as you think. Cap…[Read more]
