Honestly – I don’t care. I have just as much respect for landscape designers as landscape architects. Call me naive, but it seems like a landscape designer who has attainted a BLA is just as respectable as someone who has a BLA and took the time to get licensed. I feel like you’re almost stating that people who haven’t gotten licensed are .…[Read more]

Markets open in 3 hours. You buy. It goes up on Monday. Best advice about the market: “Always do the opposite of what most people think.” The buy low and sell high theory is misguided. Nobody knows when the low actually occur. In March 2009, it went very low and many were still saying it would go lower, but it never did drop below 6500. Many…[Read more]

Yeah, they just LOVE brown in the desert Southwest. I’ve read that its the hardest thing to get used to about the physical landscape. It was for me, after spending most of my life in the seasonally lush northeast.
Is this for a noise barrier? We tried so many different form liners and color applications when I was with the NJDOT. Some of t…[Read more] -

Color in general seems to be a weak point in our profession. From your fake feces browns to that dyed red mulch that drives me nuts, I think it is more a case of material selection period than just the color. I can’t understand why the same hideous engineered wall systems keep being used when there are much more realistic options in much better…[Read more]

Allyson, You are breaking the law and could be putting your self in jepordy of being fined by your state licensing board by advertising yourself as a landscape architect on land8. You will not win this fight. The laws are clear in every state. Read them. You appear to be the one who needs to get over yourself.

the brown wall is for a different organization, not UCSD…I think I would kill myself rather than go before the academical committees again, trying to get something built..
I wish I could tell these guys that the fred flinstone wall is stupid and ugly – I actually already did, in a slightly earlier phase of the process..i.e., a few weeks ago..But…[Read more] -

Scatological! I might have to borrow that…
Nothing is worse than a material pretending to be something it’s not. A girlfriend once took me to see a waterfall in Vegas. It was big and brown and looked like painted concrete. She asked me what I thought… I told her, “I prefer the real thing” which I guess summarizes my opinion on Vegas in…[Read more] -

Worst case scenario: you stop maintaining it and it becomes a more rustic / naturalized version… a hybrid of it’s former and current self.

I remember hearing that it’s maintained by private and public partnership, and I’m sure the businesses there are quite happy with it attracting tourists. I too like to know how much it costs to maintain it versus the revenue from tourism

A free mind? Well then call me Dr. Smith! I don’t see what is so brave and noble about throwing a fit and insisting you are correct. That is just me. I deal in reality.

Also, just have to point out again…acting as if this “down time” is some sort of blessing in disguise is pure delusion. haha. Really? Yeah. I am sure they are all rereading old issues of Landscape Architecture Magazine to stay up to date. haha.

I learned before I graduated that, if people are looking to make the big bucks and have the world kiss their butt because they’re an LA they’ll be greatly disappointed.
I did not think I was going to make big bucks…but no bucks? I mean, that is really what is happening here. And no, we were not taught that the profession was so unstable. That…[Read more] -

Meta-tags–The client needs to tell the web designer specifically what words to enter as part of the code on their website. This is probably the biggest loophole out there and is, in my opinion, deceptive.
