The only firm who seem to think an MLA is important is Design Workshop. From 1999 to 2008, their employment ads always had a preference for the MLA. I know because I applied on three different occasions, received 2 interviews (Tahoe and Phoenix offices) but never a work offer.
Getting a BSLA and MLA makes no sense. Pursue something in business or…[Read more] -

So….forget everything I have said about licensure being important. In my state, Colorado, licensure has been on the books for nearly three years after decades of lobbying. Congrats to the local ASLA chapter for their advocacy….Right? Wrong…After three years there are only a few municipalities in the entire state the have ‘adopted’ the…[Read more]

According to the abstract, they found vegetative cover was more important than vegetative diversity. Apparently, this is not true for bees: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/08/big-city-bees-healthier-more-productive.php

Nope
You need a licensed landscape architect to even advertise landscape architectural services. Unless you have someone with a license as a contact person with the state, under whose license the firm is opertating, the word “architect” or “architecture” cannot appear in advertising, as you are saying that you are providing LA services, when y…[Read more] -

Read your state regulation. Most are very clear that you can not, but I have not read every one of them.
I’m always amazed at how many people have not read their state regulation.

I considered going to graduate school for civil or environmental engineering until I found out from several engineers and academic advisers that many states will not allow you to become a PE unless you hold a bachelors degree in engineering first. Also, many masters of civil engineering programs require a bachelor’s degree in engineering to be…[Read more]

I am thinking Thornless Honey Locust, to still let a good amount of light in…also because it shouldn’t get too too big.
Where are you that honeylocust don’t get really big?
Any way… consider light levels as well. If the walls are high, the lower branches will get shaded out and over time you may end up with an “umbrella”

I did a courtyard that was slightly larger, but I planted it densely with NE native woodland trees, both semi-mature and saplings.
Are your clients concerned with the size of the tree? The light level? What is the height of the surrounding walls and windows? What are you planning on doing with the ground-plane? Are there any utilities to worry about? -

Now that it has been a year since the thread was started what did you end up deciding on?
I know someone from school that went back for an MBA, that seemed to be a good choice for him.
I would love to do that. It would be helpful to know more about the business side of the industry. -

Denise,
I really feel your anger is misdirected. Frustration understandable? Absolutely. We own a design/build firm in Idaho and my husband was able to sit for his exams right out of college and actually be licensed. I know some will boo and hiss at this…but I don’t really care. If we had to wait for licensure IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. Because as…[Read more] -

The problem is that politics are so ugly right now that politicians use these sorts of policies to flex their muscles. With all the push for cutting deficits and not raising taxes on the rich…the money has to come from somewhere. So they are taking it from the people with the least amount of money to spare. We are trying to pay down our student…[Read more]
