Is it easy to get into engineering from LA? The other way around is easy, and yes it is easier to get interviews for work in certain areas. Assuming someone is looking to be able to get a PE, that involves pretty much a 3yr engineering pre-reqs from undergrad.
maybe environmental management? seems like a nice niche in consulting that’s gro…[Read more] -

Bringing this thread back from the dead. With so many people considering extra education during these times, I’d like to hear from some of Land8’s 11,700+ members. Know an LA who’s gone for more education in a complimentary field? How did it work out for them? Please share your story.

Many LAs work without any employees. … many more than a few years ago.

For a cheap place to stay, there is a hostel in the Little Italy of SD. There is also a cheap hotel geared more towards young people & students. You need to bring your own sheets! There is no daily cleaning. Can’t recall the name. Both are within walking distance of the convention center, and a short cab ride from the airport.

Thank you for the great ideas! I have not been a member of ASLA for 2 years now but was a member throughout school and 1 year after school as an emerging professional.
As suggested, I’ve contacted my local chapters of ASLA without any response. The San Diego Chapter responded but no good news there–they already gave out all their “comp ti…[Read more] -

I’ve noticed a lot of design/build firms, including ones that I knew didn’t have any licensed people on staff, using “landscape architect” as a search keyword so that their advertising comes up through search engines and on the advertising sidebars of pages. That’s kind of annoying, and I imagine its difficult to prosecute, as a board would have…[Read more]

I spoke with some people at ASLA who told me they would be selling $25/day expo tickets closer to the conference date. Perhaps give them a call to double check. I’m trying to attend at a reduced cost because I simply cannot afford $1000+ trip to San Diego as an AmeriCorps member and no longer qualify for a reduced rate and they only extend v…[Read more]

Denise, I doubt the comment about RLA’s “hoping to keep new graduates out of the job market through the licensing laws” for some 2-3 reasons besides the laws being there before the recession even started. First, RLA’s probably never were the main employers for new grads. I’m willing to bet most had to start with multi-disciplinary firms,…[Read more]

Nope, this generation can’t get out and build the beautiful stone arch bridges on the Blue Ridge Parkway and other CCC projects that the still-manually skilled men of the 30’s knew how to or could be taught to do. “Shovel ready” jobs now take considerable construction training and we also have a lot of “undocumented immigrants” here that can…[Read more]

Jason, I actually got the idea for the tree species from Paley Park, however Im trying to show a space closer in size to the actual courtyard in the project. Although Paley Park is small…it’s not quite small enough for this. Thanks though!

Looming? It started back in April 2011. The recent stock market crash only means one thing: time to BUY! Are you a wolf or a sheep. I’ll come back to this trend later and give my two-cents worth of opinion…

You’re doing the right thing, Ashish! Don’t be fooled by some of the comments regarding economics. Its a very sexy subject, almost as great as finance. It opens up more opportunities when you graduate. Perhaps you can even return to landscape architecture field by becoming a developer or working for one. I’ve been saying this for months, LA is a…[Read more]
