I completely do not understand the ‘governments don’t create jobs ” mantra..it simply does not make sense to me..Can someone please explain it to me? My dad was a diplomat (good job, good work, his whole life, after WWI service..) I have worked for local or state governments for twenty to thirty years enforcing environmental regs, etc..I read…[Read more]

I have empathy with the views expressed but, being ignorant of font matters, wonder why no decent font seems to have been been designed since the war (1940). Every mall has signs in a font suitable for the credits on a fred astaire movie. I use arial or take a lead from others but, of course, if you need to transmit anything digitally, you ne…[Read more]

Thomas, I didn’t know you were in Chicago; I was thinking you lived in Colorado for some reason. Thanks for the local perspective! I’d been looking at making a walking-tour of sorts like you suggested. You added a few sites that I didn’t know about. Thanks for mentioning the Lakeshore East project. That was on my list too and I’d located it on…[Read more]

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys. I’ll be sure to discuss all these ideas with my traveling buddy and see what we have time for. We don’t plan on getting a car – I’ve been told parking fees downtown are ridiculous – so we’ll use public transit and our feet to get around. That may knock out some destinations but I bet there will be more…[Read more]

I agree. They get elected by telling us they will all get us our own pony.

C’mon man, they are in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, the back pockets of the banks, paid for by our children’s children because we extended the Bush Tax Cuts for those whom dont’ need it.

I would say to buy a bunch of Calvin and Hobbes books and try and draw like Bill Watterson.

You are so smart to do this! It wouldn’t be a bad idea to learn the fundamentals of Adobe Creative Suite also.

Heather Smith replied to the topic Typical drawing production hours CAD & hand drawn in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 11 months ago
You should not have to convert their drawings to your scale
Shouldn’t have to but sometimes you do. My husband was given a file from a land surveyor and had to clean up some pretty sloppy work and bring it to scale.
I haven’t use CAD for a long time…:P But I do know that you will get faster once you get your hatches, line weights, etc. all…[Read more] -

Personally I never expected him nor do I expect any president to create jobs. My husband on the other hand started his own business. Want more jobs? Create more jobs.

I have solved the riddle….. 225,000 jobs were saved because (thanks to the government bailout) GM is still in business, and now that they make an electric car (Chevy Volt), all of those jobs are now counted as GREEN. Jobs created? ZERO

Spending time along the lake shore is great…especially if the weather is nice. Looks like you will be near the museum campus at some point so check out the Field Muesum and Adler Planetarium while you are there. I would also recommend taking some of the architectural tours. There is a boat tour which is pretty cool. You might venture to Oak…[Read more]

Why not just use cad as a base for drawings…kill two birds with one stone (or two depending on your design) I dont like hand rendering, but it sometimes looks good with a fusion between hand and computer. Its the ultimate duality between man and machine.

You can call yourself whatever you want… see custodial engineers or sandwich artists at Subway as case studies. I consider myself a designer (not a garden or landscape designer). We do everything from graphics to conceptual and abstract thinking. Why worry about labels, its not middle school. Just because you are not a “landscape arc…[Read more]

Anybody want to talk about the effectiveness of the LARE and it’s content? After I passed it I was determined to change it and make it more pertinent to what we actually do. I failed on that endeavor ostly due to lack of effort, but I still think the thing sucks.
