I think the issue of licensure for full members (or not) is still yet to be decided. Though several States have polled their members and board for an opinion to take to their Trustees, several opinions exist on either side… but to answer your question about relevancy, I would maintain that you would be hard pressed to find another professional…[Read more]

Simply put, I received a degree in Landscape Architecture and perform Landscape Architecture. Therefore, based on the definition of one who performs Landscape Architecture, I am a Landscape Architect. What I am not, is a Registered Landscape Architect. If I perform work and do not disclose whether I am registered or not I should be held at fau…

What is the issue here? Being a member of the ASLA does not equal a professional license, not even close. I can’t fault them for trying to get as many members as possible as well.
I have no real opinion here on their ability / inability in investing in the quality of the professionals. What would you like to see from them? Would you like to…[Read more] -

Perhaps we need better practice laws and stricter enforcement of practice laws to encourage licensure and secure the profession. The title arguements have become a bit circular.
For the record I believe in the title laws despite being a landscape stylist and not a Landscape Architect [ for the moment…one more exam to pass…grading : ( ] -

I have to say I have been very disappointed over the years with ASLA and what I get as a member in return. I am a big advocate for the profession and have carried that torch, but the value of being able to use ‘ASLA’ after my name has diminished greatly. I still use ‘RLA’ or ‘Landscape Architect’ because of my licensure, because I feel it d…[Read more]

Sorry, Jarrod. One is not a landscape architect by merely performing work requiring registration. If you are performing work that is defined by a state’s Practice Act, without direct supervision by a Landscape Architect, you are breaking the law. It is unfortunate, that you feel your postulate is obvious, when you are absolutely incorrect. The l…[Read more]

Thanks for the reminder about address and phone number. I’m just so used to making sure that it is always there.

Something I just noticed: take down the resume’s you’ve uploaded here so far (if you can) and re-post versions with your address and phone number blacked out or removed. You never know what kind of unsavory people are lurking the web. Also, I’d move your “experience” section to the end of your resume; after work experience and before honors and…[Read more]

I agree with the employers’ market point, but I’m just not going take anybody’s swollen head crap anymore. I’m old enough to not keep my mouth shut.
I’ve posted a reworked format, still in draft, but I am liking it much more.
I do the same with postings that I find. I’ve got somewhere in the 60 to 70 range of folders like this. -

Yes, I am a designer, an artist, an engineer, a golf course architect, a spec writer, an ecologist, yada yada yada. I understand that the debate is not going to be solved here. The document that Jennifer posted from California is quite clear. That should be a national standard. Although, I disagree with the Golf Course Architect port…[Read more]

Thanks for the input everyone. The resume that I posted today was about Version 30 that I have written since September of last year and I hadn’t written one, other than for an SF330 since 2003. This one hasn’t gone to any potential employers. I think there is more desperation in this resume than all the others that I have written so far. I’ve…[Read more]

Regarding calling yourself an LA – remember who your audience is. You may not be settled on what you should call yourself, but the principal to whom you are applying to sure does. The last thing you want to do is give the impression that you overstate things. They know you have a degree and experience based on your resume. This makes you look…[Read more]

Having a license won’t get you a job…knowing someone will.
Stating you have a license when you don’t could cause a firm to question your integrity.

First, you are a designer, but I don’t see any images on your resume – so I assume that they don’t get to see any samples of work until/unless they call for an interview? Back in the day, resumes were just type, but I think those days are over (in my humble opinion).
Second, please see this recent thread and this website (written for C…[Read more] -

Yep, just education, employment, & achievements. Add in a “Skills” section at the end to showcase your computer programs and report writing too.
To address the job specific points, use the cover letter to highlight your skills. To me a resume is little more than a declaration of eligibility (Are you educated? Have you worked? Etc.) The cover le…[Read more] -
