north arrow must be UP! Unless it isn’t. (can’t fit drawing properly…). Then be consistent throughout the drawing set.

Jon Quackenbush replied to the topic North Arrow in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 1 month ago
depends on how the view-port is set up ultimately. i don’t think it really matters where it is as long as it is viewable and consistent from drawing to drawing.

Greensburg, Kansas, USA was devastated by a tornado several years ago. Here’s a starting point for you:

I agree – have you received enough feed back so you can share the results? Our company is looking into what’s happening “next” and this could help us make some informed decisions.

Yes, in Nashville any licensed professional such as engineers and architects can stamp plans if they are “competent” in area of landscape design….a very lousy compromise but most are done by LA’s.
Surrounding smaller towns such as Franklin or Hendersonville, specificy that a landscape architect must prepare the landscape plan. Smaller towns are…[Read more] -

I personally don’t agree with DI. I have seen schools that were never ranked jump in the top ten then back to not being ranked in two years. I don’t see how that’s possible. That being said, you should pick a grad school based on the faculty. What are you interested in and what are their credentials and specialties. Faculty are required to do…[Read more]

Thanks for your advice Damian – I am familiar with both CERA and the NZILA (I’m a member), however while I can see these organisations as being very useful throughout the research (and hopefully using the research), I am more focused at the moment on trying to find some specific international case study projects (master plans, central city…[Read more]

Stamp Required
I think we have worked hard to have the laws and codes enforced and it has made a difference on both the private and public sides. -

Alan, does your municipality require a plan to be stamped by a landscape architect for commercial projects?

Brett, that is exactly my point. You and I know that what we bring to the table for site analysis is really valuable. Unfortunately most of the other players in the construction realm don’t know that…at least where I live. I am wondering how widespread this is, and how we can fix it.

I am registered in Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi.
All three have title and practice laws. In fact all the southern states require registration. Maybe we’re not so backward after all….

The dwg import in free sketchup has been removed to try to get people to upgrade to pro. there was a free plug in for a while that you can probably find or you can just keep 7 import your files and then open them up in the newer version.

Curious to know what the issue is with Taxus baccata. …not the berry thing, is it?
I may have written more than necessary, as usual, above. We have one zoning district that requires an LA stamp. We do have some exclusive communities that have architectural review committees which also have landscape requirements. In each case they state t…[Read more] -

A few years ago I would have said 3DS Max, since almost every office uses AutoCAD. Now, though, I’d say Sketchup. Its biggest drawback is that in Version 7, Google took out the “import DWG” function. It’s still available as an add-on, though.
I haven’t download Version 8 yet – can anyone tell us if they put that function back in? Or if th…[Read more] -

Josh, that would be a great file to have. Can you archive them into a zip or rar file and post it on a file-hosting site and provide a link? With Daniel’s permission, of course.
That must have been a great workshop – I loved his book. -
Jeff D replied to the topic 3D Tree Models for SketchUp? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 15 years, 1 month ago
Agreed – one of the keys to using Sketchup is to always freeze the layers you don’t need to see at the time. And – just like AutoCAD – put everything on its correct and unique layer. Otherwise, even a medium-sized Sketchup file can slow down even the fastest computers. Also, there’s really no advantage to using 3D trees unless you’re going to…[Read more]

I’m considering getting a phd in urban design in Seattle. It would be great if I could find part time work like that while I continued my education. That would probably be the only way I could afford to stay in college, anyway.
