Try contacting Les Smith. He’s a professor at Ball State University who specializes in Equestrian Design and Planning. He was involved in the planning of the equestrian facilities for the Olympics in Atlanta 1996.

Edna, my favorite (deceased ) designer, Ed Bye, A.E. Bye, was known for his horse farms – but more for the beauty than practicality – the horses had air conditioned stalls, 20×20, so you can imagine the type of horseflesh he designed for. the dry-laid retaining walls and stone drinking trough – gorgeous! Worth looking at – his picture book of his…[Read more]

Anyone remember this little sketch that appeared in an edition of Land Arch magazine (unfortunately I don’t even know what year it was), that was a satire of all the landscape architecture cliches? I can remember it was a plan of a property, and there was a “sun-dried tomato growing area” labelled, and a whole bunch of other things like that.…[Read more]

Yes, and yes you can do it with regular CAD. The main thing Civil 3D offers (used to be available in AutoCAD map until they dissolved that!!!) is the ability to define projections in the project and it automatically places georeferenced images with the Mapiimport command (which I believe is exclusive to Civil now). Do you mean essentially using Arc Catalogue to create GIS shapefiles from drafted Civil 3d points lines and polygons? You can’t do that with regular autocad?
And haha, yes Civil 3d has a whole bunch of tools that are way beyond me… -

For what it’s worth…
You can make your profile here accessible only to members who add you as a friend so it’s pretty difficult for an employer to see what you’ve been up to…even so..
I tend to believe that I would say in person whatever I write here and my activity on Land8 is somewhat of an extension of my professional bio. That said, i…[Read more] -

I remember a student a few years ahead of me did a “Homeland Security garden” for planted form – included the above mentioned prickly plants along with poison ivy.

If you get the book “Sketch Up for Site DEsign” by Daniel Tal there are many invaluable shortcuts and a great chapter on acquiring and using plugins.

My vote is also for Sketch Up. Really really fast learning curve, and then eventually advanced users can do some pretty good models and renderings.
