I.E. If you currently make $45,000/yr, stop working, go back to school and spend $80,000 getting an MLA, the economic opportunity lost is $90,000 (two years not working) plus $80,000 for school makes the total investment $170,000!
Exactly. It makes more economic sense to wait tables or drive a bus during a downturn than to get into more debt for…[Read more]

Update for me, My company is still at reduced hours (VERY reduced) but today I started an Adjunct Professor gig at Philadelphia University teaching Urban Design Studio! I could not have asked for a better gift! I hear that my company is about to pick back up maybe in September or October, finally some new jobs starting up and some dormant jobs…[Read more]

I must say I both agree and disagree (best way to say nothing at all, right?).
I currently work very closely with the landscape contractors and many are locals who have grown up cutting grass, planting trees, shrubs, and flowers, and maintaining peoples’ properties. Many of them pick up the difference between a rose and an azalea and, through…[Read more]

An MLA is required if you want to teach. Government will pay more for an MLA. (but not a lot more) That’s about it from a pay perspective. Many MLA programs are for those with an undergraduate degree outside of the design fields who wish to pursue landscape architecture, and would rather not have a second bachelor’s degree, or wish to do more…[Read more]

Tom Ellenwood replied to the topic Has anyone worked/lived in China? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 9 months ago
I did a 3-month internship with a Chinese company in Hangzhou, China near Shanghai. Hangzhou is a smaller city, but it is also a big tourist place. I worked predominately on layouts for new high-rise apartments and shopping areas. The language barrier and the difference in culture were the hardest things to overcome. I suggest trying to find out…[Read more]

I thought this would be a discussion about ecological urbanism. I had not heard of it but it sounds interesting. Is it sustainable urban design, or is it design that purports to connect the urban fabric with the larger environment?

Elizabeth,
I noticed that you were planning to take the Louisiana plant exam section and that you have some study materials from other L8L members. I will be attempting the exam in December and would love to have a more focused set of plant lists. Do you mind sharing some of the information with me? I thought it also might be beneficial to get to…[Read more] -

You are right. But we just experience that students never use libraries. And so many publishers do not believe in the future of print!. But I do. To my opinion a review such as Topos is not much worth in a digital version. So we have to build up other media aside, digital and daily updated. There is many fresh information to be sent out…[Read more]

Great discussion topic! I have thought about this for quite a bit and now that I consult for myself and although work is steady I have decided to pursue my MBA. I figure the work will come in and pick up in time, but what a great time to pursue a higher education, this can only make you more marketable in a very competetive market. I recommend…[Read more] -

I still love printed media, magazines, books. I have an extensive landscape and architecture library of books that I would never give up. Too much research now shows only reading digital media actually makes you absorb/process less of what you read,

I don’t know that I can address the original question, as I just don’t know the degree of layoffs or level of projects people still working manage to find or how they find them (in central NC). However, job postings are almost nil except for a couple that have appeared recently in the Charlotte area. I feel badly for new grads, but I went through…[Read more]
