C’mon guys, you are not looking if you are not finding quantification of removal of pollutants by bio-swales..
http://www.raingardens.org/bioretention.phpThat page has a link to the first page I posted the link to, which is Univ of Md. research, ALL of it involving quantification of removal of…[Read more]

but the purpose is not only sediment /pollution trapping, Andrew, but on-site water retention. In that case, a rain garden (which is a silly word for a simple concept) is ALWAYS better than paving, no?
And you DID say that the general feeling is if you don’t put rain gardens everywhere ‘we will all die.” I think this is mischaracterizing your…[Read more] -

I have not mischaracterized anything, but have been very mischaracterized by you. I like rain gardens and bioswales except when we have to put them in rediculous locations – in tree islands of 200 -400 SF. I do new construction as well as redevelopment and NONE of any drainage that I’ve worked on is piped or swaled off site, let alone into the…[Read more]

Rebecca,
I have taken the drawing course, but was not able to have it count as graduate course credit. I didn’t need the credit, so I didn’t push very hard.
However, following your line of thought regarding the independent study, if you are taking a full course load, additional hours may not cost anything more. If you are a full-time student…[Read more]

LEED in Landscape Architecture 15 years, 12 months agoDoes anybody have any experience with LEED projects in India? We are working on a possible LEED ND project in Tamil Nadu and I’m not sure how some of the US requirements will transfer over there. Is the USGBC pretty amenable to adjusting the prerequisites based on differences in infrastructure systems?

I think you are mischaracterizing your ‘opposition’ Andrew. You are not going to die if you don’t do bioswales. And they do not solve all problems..(pharmaceutacal drugs.). But the basic principle that it is far superior to contain water on-site is one that the vast majority of our existing built landscape does NOT abide by..You, unfortunately for…[Read more]

This is an important issue because lots of municipalities are requiring rain gardens and bioswales in applications where they have negative impacts to other values in site design such as safety and maintenance, not to mention real estate. Qualitatively, there is no doubt that some excess nutrients and contaminants are removed, but there seems to…[Read more]

I am glad, Alec, that you took the trouble to specify your question, after doing a bit of research..As you know from your cursory reading, bacteria is treated by other bacteria in the topsoil layer, and is one of the trickier aspects of greywater. .
I am offended by your labeling of ‘fiction’ something that is based on established engineering…[Read more] -

Great question TJ – I would be interested in hearing others opinions as well. I graduated with my MLA a year ago now, but am also interested in teaching at some point as an adjunct or full-time prof. I know that in addition to CELA and ASLA, there is a good listserv (affiliated with CELA I think) that usually has almost every teaching position…[Read more]

I don’t have a lot of faith that you will land a position by cold calling. Universities more often than not are required to post positions for a certain length of time in well circulated publications for fairness, much like a legal announcement. Many people stay connected to universities where they studied or near where they live and have an…[Read more]

I think it is a good idea to see the data behind the structure. LID is all the rage right now, but we are not certain how effective it is in all cases. Numbers data is especially important.

The best way I can think of is to contact the human resources or landscape architecture department directly. They may have adjunct positions open. Most full-time, associate professor positions these days require at minimum professional licensure and an MLA or BLA and masters in a related field (engineering, horticulture, environmental science).…[Read more]

For those of you who were incensed that I question the effectiveness of rain gardens and bioswales in the treatment of grey water I challenge you to show me data quantifying removal of bacteriological pollutants. I am finding the opposite. These BMP’s do not effectively treat grey water. There is hard date showing removal of nitrogen, phosphorous,…[Read more]

Thanks for the post, I want to be on the up and up in everything I do because if it is not then there might be clients that are lost in the future because of something that I do not know or understand. Great topic, I learned something about the profession that I did not previously know.
