The new blood may be occupied by looking for work and wondering where their profession is hiding, and scared that they just spent thousands of dollars on a frigid discipline. Something MUST happen to get even a hint of a recovery to get banks lending and developers and homeowners spending. Pie in the sky may get the conversation rolling. Looking…[Read more]

The character played by Annette Bening (a realtor) in “American Beauty” references a Landscape Architect when trying to sell a home.

Last month, LA Magazine had an article about acquiring work overseas or in the mideast. While it seems that the answer to the abysmal amount of work here in the US these days is to turn your life upside down and move to another part of the world, many pitfalls, questionable ethics and cultural differences can turn that idea into a bad decision.…[Read more]

I have been using it for around five years, I love it….very professional and easy to integrate. The people and tech staff helps and has lots of info.
I dont know what the heck I would do without it. Compiling a plant list by hand seems archaic now. -

Having experienced all of the above and more, including starting my own consulting practice, all I can say is:
Bravo, BZ Girl, most of us have been there….we’re all just trying to take control of our careers. I think it may be a natural progression…pushed fast forward by economic turmoil. The ‘Great Recession’ or the ‘recession that made us…[Read more] -

From the moment I saw the notice for “Land 8” in LA magazine a few years ago, I of course logged on. In short, it has helped. I have been on my own since 2008, and the independence, fear, confidence and awakening that everything has led to this was confirmed by all of those on Land 8.
No one said it would be easy, isnt it the ‘journey’ that counts?;) -

Most everyone in the industry knows that a license separates a designer and an architect. Engineering firms most certainly do. Design Build companies know more often than not, many of their bosses are either one. Help wanted ads usually specify Landscape/Architect or Designer or one of either. This is the way it is. Just because some individuals ‘…[Read more]

This is the typical b.s. you see, now likely in all sectors. It existed before, but now its just beyond ridiculous. There is no recourse for the candidates. It existed before, with work sometimes able to sustain the employee. Now its just a free for all. Companies will cut to the bone and practically lay you off before you get the job, its quite…[Read more]

Can anyone point out a good source for sustainability and materials and methods. It felt great on the exam, but something has to be missing. Im floating between 2s and 3s and I have referenced many books that I have. Do the practice exams help?

I really love Land F/X. It really is professional ‘Landscape Architectural’ software. The planting symbols and database are excellent. It runs great with SketchUp, although I may need a software upgrade, because it locks up often. I see alot of designers using either Dynascape or Vectorworks, I guess because it automatically renders, but it looks…[Read more]

In NJ, all rules are dictated by the Site Plan Law and also by specefic municipal ordinances. Lately, alot of municipalities require that landscape plans for public work only be designed by a licensed landscape architect, “or an individual the board approves as equal”. In 2009, our Title Act became a Practice Act, but the tasks that are allowed in…[Read more]

As a veteran of a few civil firms….it gives me the cold sweats and no relief for one minute about the stability of the LA in the civil firm. Until municipalities or private clients insist on the use of LAs and some
solutions with more than a “black & white” approach, it will go on.
For LAs in the civil firms, here’s two rules for any kind of…[Read more] -

I guess we all get into things that appeal to us. Money becomes a factor when the work stops. Otherwise, we would all go after an MBA degree. (Which has in fact has occurred, to an effect). This particular down economy has caused almost everybody to question their chosen field, and has magnified the instability of landscape architecture. It just…[Read more]

I can only tell you, after being in the field for sixteen years now, that Landscape Architecture is 100% market driven, from residential design to large developer work. Unless you work for a municipality, there MAY be some more job all security. As with most things, as great as LA is, this is the curse that dogs the profession. This recession so…[Read more]
