Married filing jointly today for the twentieth time, actually. I’m not sure what I need an excuse for. I am pretty open to chiming in with my honest opinions even on controvercial subjects such as this one. I said that I am a white male without a last name that indicates religion or cultural origin and I’m married. I’m your stereotype…[Read more]

She actually stepped down as I was re-enrolling (I was in her sophomore class 12 years before). There were only four full time faculty (all men) in the department at the time, but there were two women adjunct professors. There is now one full time professor and one assistant professor who happen to be female – all of the male faculty were there in…[Read more]

I think there was either a “women in landscape architecture” class in my U (Idaho) or there was a separate organization dedicated to it. … even in Idaho, the department chair was a women in the early 90’s. I remember that the title “women in landscape architecture” was very prevalent s…[Read more] -

You got me thinking and trying to genderize the places that I have worked at, the boards that I present to, the attornies and consultants that I often work with … The best news is that I actually did have to think about it, hopefully because it is just such a non-issue. But when I do think about it, males are the majority in numbers, but of…[Read more]

I replaced point & shoot Canon with another inexpensive Canon SX-130 simply because it took AA batteries (I like being able to get batteries any time, although I use rechargeables). It was below $200, but I don’t honestly remember the price (thinking $160). I am amazed how good it is. The thing that I like the most is that it can take a fairly…[Read more]

I went to the ultimate authority – my wife (white woman who used to have a jewish last name). I read the OP and asked “what would you do?”.
Her response was that no one takes anyone seriously on a team until they are on the same page as the team. You tell them what they want to hear until they start listening. Then you introduce new ideas. She…[Read more] -

I make long posts and a lot of them, and I don’t blame you for not reading all of them or reading all the way through any of them. If you do, you will find that I do believe that there is discrimination.
If you read Craig’s, you would know that he is an African American … or as he said “black”.
If you do not “go around them” or “through t…[Read more] -

No one is standing up for bigots and jerks. What some are saying is that courses of action are limited unless there is clear, provable in a court of law, discrimination going on. It is not about accepting them, but it is about moving on despite them. Yup, it sucks to have to work harder because of it, but any person working harder is stronger and…[Read more]

Stereotypes are all over the place, but I do not think that anyone who is honest with himself or herself can honestly say that (s)he has not worked with and/or for strong women and men, weak women and men, women with stereotypic behaviors and men with stereotypic behaviors, women who are back stabbers and men who are back stabber, women who go o…[Read more]

Read my earlier post between the difference of instittional discrimination and individual discrimination. I clearly stated that I do not think there is very much institutional discrimination any more. But there are individuals who discriminate based on gender, race, etc,…

The question is not whether or not discrimination exists – and it exists everywhere to one degree or another. The question is what is the next course of action.
Discrimination is usually subtle and hard to decipher. That makes it very difficult to prove. It also is very easy to believe that any bump in the road is attributable to discrimination…[Read more] -

If you convince yourself that you are not a victim, there is no waiting around for intervention (that is not coming). You move forward with a more determination. That is what uncategorized people do without hesitation. They get no sympathy. They get no help. They don’t take the time to call out for it.
I’m not saying that you are not a victim. A…[Read more] -

BZ,
As a middle aged male that attends a lot of meetings that are dominated in number by males and having participated in back room chatter, I do not believe that women and their input are generally treated any differently than men. I hear plenty of stereotypes about various professions or mind sets of certain companies, but I can not remember…[Read more] -

Have you researched any existing plans of the land that you will be working on? I would recommend going with someone who already has established control on the site because they do not have to charge to re-invent the wheel and they should be able to turn the job around faster because they already have it set up. …. I work in a civil/survey office.

Just how much random opinion is going to help you out? You had another thread that you pushed along that was supposed to be a survey and we never saw the result of that data you collected. Now you are pushing this.
