Sounds like he’s selling the same old-time religion he was 20 years ago. Amazing. Yeah, some of his stage banter will make the more intellectual and socially conscious LAs cringe. I attended his seminar as it was offered as part of our curriculum. I never really cared for those kind of gaudy, cartoony renderings he does, though I’ll admit they do…[Read more]

Wow, the empathy and sense of community here is just flowing.
Not too long ago, on another site, you were angrily posting about leaving planning and how it had jilted you and what other careers you thought you could do. You’d go on about your interviews and job search efforts and everyone would politely listen and offer advice. How quickly we forget. -

I imagine you saw Food, Inc.? They had a part about Monsanto’s actions. Infuriating. Yes, let’s genetically engineer pesticides into the foods we eat. It’s not like we’re drinking glyphosate or something.

The NPS wants people who went to 160 credit (5-year) LA programs or they want you to have a lot of experience in the kind of work they do. I think its a little elitist myself. They do strike me as interesting jobs, even though most of them require living and working in a remote location.

Did you see the LA Times article about this? They had the UC Riverside Plant science and Botany department head as a consultant. I tried posting a link but it crashed my browser. Been having some problems with this site. Maybe its time to upgrade to IE7.

Yeah, I had my struggles with that section and passed it on the 3rd try. Some of the comments you get back on redlines can be infuriating. If you don’t do grading regularly, it will be tough to get it done in the given time period. I felt that they should offer more time as there were occasions when I realized I was heading in the wrong direction…[Read more]

Was that the Northeast Philly airport James? That’s where I took a couple of the multi-choice sections. That Prometric company seems to specialize in the pilot’s licensing stuff. I don’t remember noise being an issue. Maybe the building was well insulated.

Meh, I say postpone your graduation as long as you can! You can see what the job market is like!
Are you looking into permaculture concepts at all?
When I was with the NJDOT we would do little wetlands within highway cloverleaf loops, and Bald Cypress was often a tree of choice. Yes, they can grow that far north. Wetlands like that aren’t much…[Read more]

That looks a lot like freecycle in concept http://www.freecycle.org/ except, obviously, that the stuff’s not free! Have you ever used that? One problem I’ve come across is that the cost of landfilling is often less than what the cost of transporting materials to a new site would be. In Las Vegas, we are so far from other markets that we are…[Read more]

Any of you happen to notice the posting for a job in Atlanta on the ALSA website? I’d link it here but the Job Board has some technical issue right now. Anyway, it had a line that was something like “If you are a landscape architect who is tired of being unemployed…” That was the first I had seen, ever, that indicated employers know there are…[Read more]

Boilerplater replied to the topic regenerating desert areas using swales and mulch in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years ago
Yeah, that is pretty cool that they can get such thriving plants with directed rainfall. In my experience working in the desert of Las Vegas, we often replace the soils entirely because the native soils are so poor and bereft of organic matter. And then irrigation tends to cause salts to come up in the soil, a problem also common to some soils of…[Read more]

OK, so its Treehugger. Consider the souce, right? And someone’s probably going to say that just because 97% of climate scientists say its happening it doesn’t mean it is. Yawn. -

Are you in SoCal now? Sounds like it from that list.
Majestic Beauty Hawthorns are good for a smaller tree that drops very little material. Italian Cypress is also good by the standard of dropping debris.

Last year I met a saleslady who repped this company’s products: She claimed they could handle the sun and heat of Las Vegas, where I work, or did at least, until August. I never did have the chance to spec them for a job. They are quite pricey…the stuff of movie star’s homes. They’re based in Santa Barbara, so there must be a rep for your area.

I wonder if the reason bikers want to be on streets is that it is perceived to be safer from potential assailants. I know that even though a species may be native, it may not be endemic to the ecosystem they are trying to restore, so they try to eliminate it. I beleive its largely due to the overly litigious society we have. The LAs want to shift liability over to the play equipment manufacturers, or their insurer requires them to do so. Schools also want play areas that are easy to police by teachers & aides. They don’t want places where kids can hide or where perverts & kidnappers might hide. Clear…[Read more]
