John, I use Microsoft Project at work. It’s a little daunting at first. But once you start playing with it, it’s fairly intuitive. I also downloaded an iPad app called SG Project Pro. It’s expensive for an iPad app. $40. But it seems comparable to Project and it’s a lot cheaper too. I haven’t started playing with it yet, but I’m going to run my next project with it.

I don’t know the model # off the top of my head, but it was ~$500.00 when we bought it new last year. I really like the quality of picture on the screen and no complaints.

The firm I currently work for has a very small (6 employees) LA department and about 30+ environmental planners. While I enjoy the environmental planning, it’s not the same a design work, and talking to the LA’s in our firm, the projects are getting fewer and farther between. One final note, our IT dept. has blocked access to every social media site besides LinkedIn. I know more than a few colleagues who have said that after spending 8-10 hours a day staring at a computer at work, the last thing they want to do when they get home is sit in front of a computer and read about how hard times are all over the country. Did someone mention bear spray? I might need some of that. 🙂

I like the mobile site and use it frequently. 2 requests/suggestions.
In the forum, you can’t browse by category. Can this be added?
Also, there is no access to groups. Can this be added as well?
Thanks!

Some work related Apps I use every day:
Todo: $9.99: It’s a great GTD app. Very customizable. It’s a lifesaver for me.
ReQall: a great dictation app that you can set up to text or email your transcript to you. It’s free, but I paid the $25/yr subscription for unlimited use.
Jetset: $4.99: Expense tracker, uploads to Google Docs (excel spreadsheet).
Fossil: $7.99: Time tracker. Took a little while to set up, but straight forward and easy to use. It’s a great time/expense tracker for project management.
Instapaper Pro: $4.99: Great for saving links when you don’t have time to read them on the fly. It saves URLs until you sync them and have time to read the article offline. Great for skimming your google reader before the subway/plane flight.April 17, 2010 at 4:31 am #170171Boyd ColemanParticipantI’d love to see one!
October 7, 2008 at 9:27 pm #176390Boyd ColemanParticipantI’d also like to know other’s thoughts on the new exam. I’m considering taking it and am looking for study material other than what is listed on the LATC website.
October 6, 2008 at 10:05 pm #176392Boyd ColemanParticipantIt’s funny you say that Brian…I was thinking the exact same thing. And then another guy in my department and I were shooting the breeze the other day and mentioned we should look at doing some work overseas due to the fact that work is slowing up here. Seems they aren’t immune to it either.
September 29, 2008 at 7:55 pm #176899Boyd ColemanParticipantHere in Arizona, we are not required to have a council record. I got my license earlier this year and I didn’t have a council record at the time. However, since my company has offices in other states, my employer would like for me to become licensed in some of those states and is willing to pick up the tab for the cost of any expenses incurred with this. This includes the council record.
I have to admit that if I didn’t work for my current employer and had to pay for it myself, I probably wouldn’t do it and just stay licensed in Arizona. It seems rather expensive for something I can do myself. But the process has been pretty painless and it does make it easy for applying for reciprocity in states that do require it. I agree with Brian. If you are only going to get licensed in one or two states that don’t require it, then it may not be worth your time. But if you think you might want to get licensed in other states eventually, it’s something to definately consider.

September 19, 2008 at 9:40 pm #176799Boyd ColemanParticipantI’d be interested in learning about this as well. I’m considering pursuing LEED accredidation, however, I haven’t a clue where to start. I understand there are supposed to be some changes to the program after the first of the year, but I’m not sure what all it entails. I’d love to hear what others have studied and their thoughts on the accredidation process.
