ida replied to the topic NYC AIDS Memorial Park Design Competition…And the Winner is…what do you think? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 10 months ago
Out of all the other entries, the winning concept is presented as a quiet and calming space, which memorials need to be. Though in reality, a house of mirrors may be too chaotic…
The idea that the space is the memorial and not some sculpture is interesting, but as mentioned already, it looks like any other plaza. Something has to be added to…[Read more]

My profile is false to protect my identity and my company’s identity. I doubt your real name is Maui Bob.
There are a lot of foreigners working in China as consultants simply because Chinese clients regard foreigners as experts. I know many who are sustainability consultants providing knowledge to local designers and developers, and, getting…[Read more]

Funny how nearly every type of car is perfectly identical in shape, size, color, and rotation. If you look closely you can see some cars have no shadow or little shadow compared to it’s neighbor. I also don’t know of a freeway that large in Shanghai. It’s a photoshoped image…

Yeah the article is a bit of a yawn, but we’re designers, so we already know and sometimes over say that stuff. It’s the NY Times so the audience is the common person who may have no clue about any of this fancy arch talk. I would be disappointed if this article was in a respected journal.
I think the Metro station project in Spain is in…[Read more] -

Chill out dude. I was responding to the previous comment that LA is dead. It’s not, firms are still working, and there is still work to be done. Our industry just can’t hand out LA degrees like candy anymore or spit out cookie-cutter crap like in pre-recession times.

Experiences in China vary. What you say about Beijing and Shanghai can be said about Los Angeles or NYC.
There will always be jobs for good LAs. We just need to adjust our ideas and skill set to stay relevant.

Ouch, yes, you should not work till you get your paycheck!
You do want to be careful there especially working at the smaller local Chinese firms. A word of advice, if they don’t offer to get you a work permit, then that should raise alarm bells and you should be very cautious. However, there are many international offices in China and large…[Read more] -

Golden Gate Park!
De Young Museum, for sure should be on your list. Also, Andy Goldsworthy’s installation at the Presido, “Spire” and the surrounding park is a treat to see.

You can also try the famous Vitra, they manufacture beautiful products from great designers. I don’t think they have benches, but they do have some outdoor chairs and tables

I wish when architects are inspired by landscape, they should consider the functional aspect of the spaces and not just form. Somehow I think a Zaha building is too static and rigid to be considered landscape, and unfortunately the exterior spaces of her buildings are just as static and anything but dynamic as what landscape or nature truly i…[Read more]

The aesthetic part is very important (it’s what distinguishes us from being another urban planner or horticulturist), but you definitely need some function to make your project stronger. The garden program that was mentioned is interesting. There are many concepts you can do and there really is no wrong concept. Choose one and execute it well. I…[Read more]

ida replied to the topic What is the best modeling/rendering software for landscape design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years ago
Usually the most user friendly program is not the best program to use. It’s like doing construction drawings with Windows Paint. Yes Win Paint is easy, but by no means a good tool for a professional and serious task.
For rendering landscapes, the best combination of modeling and rendering programs is to use 3dsMax, Vue, and Vray for 3dsMax. The…[Read more] -

Great advice already.
Thomas, I was in the same boat several years ago. I took a job as a landscape designer out of college at an architecture office in China for one of those wannabe starchitects (aka insecure douchebags). The boss was an ass and some of the architects had such huge egos it was hard to work with them. Some days were ok where I…[Read more] -
