I think what bothered some of us was the disconnect with the LEED remark specifically. I may be disconnected myself but knowing the builder/developer industry around here pretty well, I just can’t picture a scene with some of them having drinks at an area builder’s group and saying to each other (or themselves in private)…I’m going to do a LEED…[Read more]

I suppose it was natural for the journalist to put the statements of the national organization person above the later comments by another LA or two. I notice that happens a lot in articles about science, medicine, etc. The most “eye catching” statements lead (ie. about some new research) and the more nuanced opinions follow. Being head of ASLA…[Read more]

I was reading some of the less flattering comments on another site earlier, and one of the funnier ones said his approach was something like “people like bridges, so I’ll use bridges; people like lights in windows so I’ll make the cottages look like they’re on fire; people like chimneys, so I’ll put in 2-5 per cottage.” But the writer said you…[Read more]

I like his work for technique and even read one of his books….but one tiny thing I always notice is that in his clearly “spring” scenes of cabins surrounded by blooming dogwoods, there is often smoke coming from the chimneys, and he shows street lights burning when it is not really dark. They have chilly springs in his worlds, I guess. Our…[Read more]

I helped in the initial stages of Dr. Fountain setting up a BS program at A&T State U in Greensboro using the same logic: putting a program on a new campus, but in the early unaccredited stages he still worked very closely with a full program school and maybe this one in CA is likewise. However the promo language seemed to not stress future…[Read more]

Andrew, I think we’re coming to the same place from different starting points, but that is my gripe here. There is no way such grads would be familiar with the methods, much less comfortable with the process of layout, staking, details, and everything else needed for a portion of a state park, campus plaza with water feature and handicap concerns,…[Read more]

I’m rather sensitive to young (or career changing) people being misled as well as the public. There are already “landscape design” concentrations or full degrees out there, but to apply the same title to something else is in fact going to attract people specifically because they will see that term and “want to be LA’s” – as Andrew referenced.

Oh, and where is storm drainage and erosion control? Are we going to just concede on the matter of whether we are qualified in these areas (we have had to fight for) by just giving up? I’d like to think the state’s professionals will keep the nationally designed exam as a challenge this school but the fallout may take some time to be revealed. Sad…[Read more]

That’s what I found rolling around in my mind after I posted, too. Besides adding to the confusion about what the term LA should mean, as if there isn’t already enough confusion….
When I was getting my degree, I had to spend 3 additional years beyond a BS in Horticulture, and there was no way to condense that because the LA school simply…[Read more]

I was just editing myself on top of you, to make my original post clearer, but I tend to agree with you. Irrigation but no city planning insights? Would they know what a conditional use permit is, and how to really interface with allied but different professions on complex projects? Write, not just read specifications?

Leslie B Wagle replied to the topic Bad font decisions, yes I'm talking to you Papyrus users! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 8 months ago
I think since our context is using CAD and Word, Photoshop, etc. and the menus say “fonts,” and that is where we make our style choices on drawings, it is that frame of reference in the posts. I don’t think I’ve even seen a familiar creative software that uses the term typeface…maybe QuarkXPress or such in another realm?

Well it took me until today to read this thread. Like most topics, there emerged some validity to both of the main “sides,” but I’m wondering if the overuse of Papyrus might have been a student problem more than a characteristic of professional plans seen? I plowed through a fair mountain of permit submissions from a lot of firms (granted, mostly…[Read more]

Go with me into the twilight zone …. could it be that schools or some kind of collective LA Jungian unconscious force is at work to grow the profession even if it’s rough on individuals? Teachers don’t stress the missionary nature of LA vs. the focus on design because a) the missionary part is hard to teach anyway and b) it would scare some…[Read more]

I have been rolling around a concept something like that in my mind, maybe zooming it out to more of a worldview. While many of us were either sold on (or hoped for) LA being treated as a profession among others, it is actually something else, if I can redefine terms a little. If a profession is something like, let’s say, nursing, that is pretty…[Read more]

Yep, and strange things can happen to that “enthusiasm” and “willingness” due to the slings and arrows of reality somewhere between 30 and 50 and they know who does it to who; so fresh organic material is required. 🙂

I got amused (?) reading this from a magazine table at a restaurant recently while waiting for the food and just found it on line (although you have to go to page 2 for links to all the parts). The points were taken from a survey of real HR people in real businesses.

It’s probably all in how you can justify the shift in resume retelling, but needs to be shown as some kind of career move with as little gap as possible (hide private life quality factors). Moving for “license credit” itself would be worthy looking but like you say, that’s less convincing if you’d still only get partial credit. Try to mask any…[Read more]
