Looks fantastic! Seems to be a nice blend with more technical information than standard glossy garden mags which concern themselves with the appearance, not how to get it. Also some good tips in it for pros.
Also, nice and clean and SIMPLE layout, yet modern. I like this better than the recently revised LAM, which is illegible at itmes with the…[Read more] -

Those Wassily chairs are painfully uncomfortable. I would throw in Noboru Nakamura’s Poang chair from Ikea. Simple and clean timeless design, insanely comfortable, and unlike the other furniture on your list…CHEAP!

I’ve got a collection started, too. My favorite is the sprinkler system on when it is pouring rain. And I’m getting more. I’ve hit the motherlode in upstate NY…where design goes to die.

Interesting…the excuse I always hear is that the trees in the islands act to shade the parking lot to reduce the heat island effect. Yea…right. You would need a real canopy for that to happen, not twigs placed at 50′ on center. Besides, just how often are the trees allowed to grow? Overzealous landscapers tend to make them into lollypops. I kn…[Read more]

Ah…my old nemesis, the parking lot island.
Your best bet is #4. Tree selection is VERY important, as parking lots generally have the worst soil and compaction issues. It depends where you are, and the width of the island, but deeper rooting trees (most often pioneer trees, not mature canopy trees) work the best. Many municipalities do not…[Read more] -

Yes, there is an exception for education and experience, but it takes a decade, and is a legacy regulation for when appreticeships were a viable path into the profession. But if you are going to pay for an education, it better be NAAB accredited, otherwise you are wasting your time. I know a few people who just got a BSArch and didn’t go for the m…[Read more]

You WILL need a masters degree now to get an architecture license, so count on spending at the very least 5 years in architecture school. It is also a lot easier to get into an LA program with an architecture degree and come out with a MLA, as opposed to getting a 4 year (possibly 5) BLA degree and having to spend at the very minimum of 2 years, p…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic How did you get started on the path to where you are now? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago
Yea, I’m lucky. I still know people may age who don’t know what they want to be when they grow up. If they ever grow up. It can be tough to make the transition to maintenance, which is why I never did it since my college summer days. I went right into large scale commercial design. The maintenance aspects are very important though. I see many LAs…[Read more]

Good point with the sole proprieters ot being part of the statistics. Those people also do not show up in the government’s unemployment numbers.
With regards to staff on websites, many firms do not house the site or maintain it on site, so it costs money to change things. Usually, only the core management staff is listed to keep the changes to…[Read more] -

I started very early on in high school I always had a green thumb and was interested in designing something. My father was an electro-mechanical engineer…so it is in the blood. I later found an interest in Architecture as well. I also explored various tyoes of engineering including electrical and software, but didn’t like either.I had to do an…[Read more]

I don’t think those statistics are being tracked nationally. There are lots of vital statistics that are not being tracked. I know a few LA firms who have all but thrown in the towel (none of them large), but I know a number of architecture and engineering firms that have closed. Around my region, there has been lots of consolidation and buyouts…[Read more]

Interesting take…I can see how you get the Corbusian influence. If it were indeed Corbusian, it would be a more standard design of towers with much higher density, and with a total lack of landscape. The new Apple complex is more along the lines of the standard US office campus idea. Shove a “acclaimed” architects building in the middle of gr…[Read more]

Its one of the top 5 rules of business. People tend to do business with places that don’t look like they need it. Looking successful instills a sense of confidence with clients, especially deep pocketed ones, that you know what you are doing…because you look sucessful, you probably are. I know I wouldn’t trust an architect that had a crappy…[Read more]

The arrogance can get to the point of being entertaining…like they are a character of themselves. Just so long as they are decent to you while working with them. Some can be downright nasty to work with. You cannot do anything right in their minds, even though you know far better than them when it comes to LA matters. You wouldn’t insist on ma…[Read more]

Perfect! Classy and understated. Perfect publication as well. Ads for wine stuff, expensive furnishings, really expensive galleries, and of course, Lexii. Spot on demographic wise. Hopefully you will see some returns on it..at least inquiries. Thats really the important thing (I know, SALES are the important thing), but just having the ad drive…[Read more]

Funny, I don’t recall learning about trapeziodal composite limestone in my geology courses? I fear for this wall in 5 years when the roots on them trees take off. Sing with me…”And the wall..comes a tumblin’ down…tumble-in tumblin’…dowwwwwn”
