Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Bloggers beware! There be Pirates abound! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 2 months ago
All you really need is to place the warning at the bottom of the page stating that the content is copyrighted and then the years active. The site that ripped off your stuff has a copyright of 2009. Your writing is content (like a book) and should be copyrighted to protect your property. It may already be through your host, but you need to take the…[Read more]

Quick question…
Did you copyright your work at the bottom of you blog page? If so, you have a legal case. They appear to have advertising on the site, and therefore they are a commercial entity. Since they are making money off of your work, sue them. Simply turning them into Google won’t do anything. You can try to send them a cease and de…[Read more] -
Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Heated Sidewalks and Street Trees in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 15 years, 2 months ago
Combo of the trees, the CU soils, and the insulating foam are troublesome. Sounds like a bad detail all the way. I actually don’t know anywhere where Acer Saccharum are used as street/plaza trees around here, but I’m not that far north. I think the trees are the least of the problem, though, provided you do have the air gap to stop the roots…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Good planning causes poor economic development?!? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 2 months ago
Working in an ‘overplanned’ area, I would agree. It has been proven that areas of Texas and California where planning has taken a back seat have had much higher investment and economic growth. Centralized government planning on many levels simply does not work. It goes against market forces and needs in the community. Just how often (and at what…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Article: College and Business Will Never Be the Same in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 15 years, 2 months ago
I think it needs to be treated kinda like med school. With the 3 +2 structure, the first 3 years are your exploratory studios and your “core” courses , the latter two are dedicated to specialties within the profession. Specialty advanced stusios and seminars that reflect those courses. Not all LAs need to know everything and be “diverse”. Our…[Read more]

so now it will take 7 years to get a 4 year degree? Schools are already having hard time cramming required material into the 4 year model (which, like arch needs to go 3+2) Even with 5 years, it is not enough time (IMHO) to get a throrough education.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic If you had unlimited start-up capital what kind of firm would you start in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 2 months ago
Thats the nice thing about buying a firm. You have a a built clientele, all the equipment, skilled staff, and (hopefully) INCOME. If you only have startup capital, you eventually will need profit. There is no reason why you can’t do what you suggested, if your firm is in good hands. It would make the situation better. BTW, it need not be a large…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Advice needed for laptop backup in the forum TECHNOLOGY 15 years, 2 months ago
Have you considered an online backup service like Mozy or Carbonite? They run about 50 bucks a year, have unlimited space, and you can access your files from anywhere (even without the PC they are originally stored on). They are also automatic when you are connected to the internet, no need to lug around a drive and power brick. I also use thumb…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic MLA accredited or not by ASLA in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 2 months ago
Stay with the accredited if it is your first professional degree. Andrew is correct, when you go to get licensed, it makes a huge difference. Some states won’t allow you to take the exam for a decade if you don’t have the accredited degree. If you already have an accredited undergrad degree, it doesn’t matter, as you only need one accredited…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Masters Programs in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 2 months ago
If you already have a BLA, then the MArch and UD @ UCLA would be fine. You are changing subjects. You want to stay away from an MLA that claims to be a “second professional degree” that lumps you in with “first professional” candidates.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Masters Programs in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 2 months ago
If you decide to got the MLA route, make sure you don’t end up in a combined program, rather, find a program that is not studio focused and will allow you to research what you want. If not, you will be wasting your time repeating much of your BLA studios and stuff. That was the mistake I made. I had an article about it in the “critic at large”…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Has anyone purchased LARE practice tests from http://www.larestudyguide.com/? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 15 years, 2 months ago
I used the PPS ones as well, and was sucessful first time through. Not only to they let you practive the test and provide answers, they teach you how to take the test, and especially what the graders look for on the charettes. Yes, they were expensive, but once I was done with them, I got back about 75% what I paid for them (I sold them right here…[Read more]

I too have met both David Rubin and Laurie Olin several times. They certainly do not have a strictly”classical” style, but tend to get they types projects that warrant it. Design retraint is an important skill to learn. Their current Canal Park project in DC is certainly not traditional.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic The Case Against Mulch Rings: A few reasons you should stop circling trees with mulch in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 15 years, 3 months ago
On mature trees, mulch rings are purely maintenance/aesthetic. They absolutely make mowing “safer”. Have you actually seen the way commercial mowers work? I used to be on a mowing crew, and its GET IT DONE and move on. Most mowers employ non-skilled labor who could care less and don’t know a darn thing about trees. “Scar the bark? Who cares?” But…[Read more]

Like most of NY, nice small towns left to die. With Troy, it’s too bad there ain’t much there, and its not the best part of town (I used to live in the Capital District) At least you got a Dinosaur BBQ now. I have to go to NYC for the closest one to me.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Web Design / Graphic Design in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 3 months ago
I totally agree with you about the ‘branding’ aspects of a firm. Most do this very poorly because they do not understand how vitally important to have an up-to-date and accurate web presence, or a cohesive “theme” with an image package. The old addage “the best way to get business is to look like you don’t need it” is very true.
It is usually…[Read more] -

I think many of you are reading too much into this. His point was that the current “trends” do not work into everyones desired lifestyles, and there should be choice.

I’ve been reading and hearing many warnings about these. They (of course) want you to send money and then they don’t do anything. Some are also identity theft rings that use your info for nefarious purposes. Be very careful with anything overseas unless you applying DIRECTLY to a known company.
