Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Great story about the release of High Performance Landscape Guidelines: 21st Century Parks for NYC in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 3 months ago
High performance landscape? Man, I love the terminology lately! What is the 0-60 time? How well exectly does a landscape corner? I bet like anything high performance (such my car) the maintenance is really complicated, parts are obscenely expensive and the tires only last 15k miles. Plus, not likely the best thing to to own in the winter. At…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Article: American Design Schools Are a Mess, and Produce Weak Graduates in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 3 months ago
The article is spot on to my experiences both with schools and the quality of recent graduates. I had written about this for my LAM article, but had to cut it out due to space constraints. Mr. Amit is correct when he states that students leave schools only with process education, not DESIGN process education. So much time is spent teaching the…[Read more]

It depends on you office stationary. Technically, you are to add the letters to the end of your name. However, if you have multiple sets of letters or a really long name, you can put them on another line. Of course, in all caps. I generally drop the font size down a few notches so the caps are the same size as the lowercase.
If you are an RLA, i…[Read more] -
Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Are there more jobs being posted? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
From my perspective as a long-time active seeker of gainful employment, there has been no substantial increase in postings. In fact, things have gotten slow enough that dated/expired posts are showing up on my automated search services instead of new posts once again. This phenomenon last occurred in August, another very slow posting month. These…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic architecture billings go higher than 2007 mark in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
It is the first quarter of positive growth. With this index, a score of 50 is neutral, no growth, no loss. So, there is .2 points growth. Great. Losses had been slowing over the past months, but then it picked up again. Hopefully, this is the start of higher billings, but given the track record of this index, it is likely just a blip and losses wi…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Pantone – Colorstrology. What's Your astrological color? in the forum GRAPHICS 15 years, 4 months ago
Scarry accurate. I don’t normally subscribe to this stuff, but this pegged me. I have a closet full of shirts this color, I have shoes this color, the interior of my car is this color, even my couch is this color (well, close). I even have a version of my logo in this color, maybe I should switch it from the monochrome? Guess I’m more like FLW…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic What is your forecast for the Landscape Architecture job market 2011 and beyond? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
This has gotten a bit beyond entertaining. The frustration on BOTH sides is palpable, and it is apparent that there are many divergent ideas on the subject. I think we can all agree that whatever it is the gubmint is doing, no matter who is doing it, it ain’t workin’ (which is why so many of us ain’t workin’ either),
It’s not a matter of right…[Read more] -

The ‘stimulus’ has really failed to materialize anything outside of street resurfacing. Many other projects had been on the DOT schedules for 5 years or more (DOTs plan out projects years in advance) meaning no design work was created. Local municipalities are broke and not investing in anything outside of necessities. ‘Stimulus’ was an utter…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Questions to ask when Interviewing for an Entry-Level Position in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
If you are to move so far, be sure to ask about the stability of work. In this economy, it is very dangerous to risk an expensive and disruptive move if the firm only has three to six months guranteed work. I know people who had gotten jobs only to have them disappear less than a year later. I had interviewed a few places myself, and several of…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Post Professional Degree Warning in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 4 months ago
The combined programs are advertised as post-professional degrees with both a research and studio component. I did indeed to a fair amount of research into the programs, and this particular university had offered the courses in what I wanted to study, only to find out that two out of the three classes in that subject were either no longer offered,…[Read more]

It’s happening with Architecture already. I’ve heard NAAB will no longer accredit BArch degrees offering only to accredit the masters. Plus, the educational standards LAAB are implementing make it exceedingly difficult to cram the requirements into 4 years, or even three for a masters. They are looking at a 3+2 program. Three yr. BS/BA, 2yr…[Read more]

I had planned on getting a Masters since I got my BLA, it was the right time to try to get the MLA. I think that if schools made it easier for professionals, working or not, to get post-prof MLAs, a ton more would. Short terms (1 year to 1.5 yrs w/ thesis), night courses, and no studio requirement (we are in studio all day, do we really need MORE…[Read more]

This article isn’t necessarily aimed at you in particular. You are in the right program since you do not have an accredtied BLA. Why I went back was to do targeted research in a two subject areas within landscape architecture, and refine my area of practice. Become an expert with degree to back it up. I had also anticipated that the studios bein…[Read more]

The list is not in publishable form, it is a mess of notes and markings. I also have about 1000 PDF files, one for each program, one or two for each program. I could see how that would indeed help and I will consider doing just that (it would take another month or so of research to contact each program director to garner any changes to the…[Read more]

Thanks Jim. I know that some schools offer options, and some are willing to work out an ‘individual’ course of study for post-prof, but I was shocked to see how many don’t. Since writing this, I have found one or two schools who are adding MSLAs to their programs in the future, but not mine, and it is a major university center. It should come…[Read more]
