You could also try Mondo Grass (not a grass at all) Ophiopogon japonicus. I think this was look you are going for…

Or you can try a new franken-grass called Bella Bluegrass. It only growns 2-3″ high, is rhizomatic, and doesn’t need as much water. I cannot get to the website today, I think all the people stuck homein the Midwest are taxing t…[Read more] -

It is NOT what CLARB states that are the standards. It is the individual States that make their own regulations. Remember, title or practice acts are laws. There usually is a route for those who do not have an accredited degree, and it usually takes 10 years before you can get licensed, and very often there are intern rules with that, too. This…[Read more]

I totally agree they they should make reciprocity easier. Why do you have to prove your education and your references when you already did it with your state and CLARB to even SIT for the exam? And to pay CLARB an abscene amount of money annualy just to keep a few kilobytes in a database, then pay AGAIN to transmit the info. I could do the same…[Read more]

Not having a LAAB accredited degree is a killer, too, as you usually have to have a lot more time under your belt to even sit for the exam (depending on the state). I had to swtich jobs to get the requisite experience, as I too was working with engineers and architects. I agree with those who said that there is w WORLD of difference in experiences…[Read more]

I’d have to see the scale of it, but it looks extraordinarily uncomfortable, and the bars on the back are just at the right height to create pain in the lower back trying to avoid them to get maximum ass-to-seat contact on what looks to be a very narrow bench. I looked at the specs online, and the total depth is 16, not the seat, but from o…[Read more] -

Besides starting a masters, I regularly attend shows, conferences, and letures by LAs and Architects. I have also traveled a bit to see major new works, and some older notable works I have not seen before. I also read a great deal in a variety of subjects just to keep learning.

I have a website, I put the address in the closing of my cover letters as well as in my letterhead and invite if the person who is hiring to look at it, as an option. I have more projects on the website. To that end, you WILL NEED a work sample package you can send them besides the online portfolio. Employers need some physical samples with the…[Read more]

Yes, include them by all means. And it sounds like you have them formatted nicely. It is crucial to some employers that you have demonstrated techinical drawing ability. I carry a set of ledger-sized CDs for one of my more complex projects to illustrate this point, and I’m a well seasoned practitioner.

I bought mine with a 40% off deal with Barnes & Noble. If you get on BN’s or Border’s e-mail list, you get coupons up to 40% (I got a 50% one time when you use a mastercard). You can also look online for the coupon codes. I have purchased quite a few expensive books this way (great for textbooks), provided they still carry it, but and…[Read more]

They have had exhibits at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, as well as at MoMa in NYC. Unfortunately, there is nothing permanent at either museum. I would love to see more permanent exhibits at the NBM, but much of the historic archietctureal obejects (models, plans and the like) are spread out among various museums such as MoMa.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Vertical gardens are truly sustainable, or not ? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 5 months ago
Will it grow without intensive and artificial life support such as fertilization or irrigation?
The only sustainable vertical garden I know of is Ivy, Virginia Creeper or Bougainvillea growing from the ground up. The stuff is essentially weeds, so it is very tough. It can also destroy buildings over time, especially masonry.

Add Landscape Architecture and Specifier News to the list.
Also, to help build relationships with local LAs, you can join your local ASLA chapter, become a sponsor, or just advertise with them.

Its nothing that cannot be done with other methods…especially for those with experience. While it may make some design decisions easier for a novice, a skilled hand can do the same thing in less time and with better accuracy. You can just LOOK at data and dermine suitability. I’ve used GIS, both professionally as well as academically, and found…[Read more]

Its not. I recently saw a study where it was around 5% to 10% of those in practice use it, and I’m leaning more towards the 5%. It is a tool that has it limits and questionable returns. It is primarily used in gov’t planning depts to keep property owner information and demographics, and zoning maps. As far as information, its like shooting at a…[Read more]

Not so much. Who will control the populations of wild coyotes? Them things is dangerous, especially for your little rodent-like dogs and cats. They are even dangerous to humans if they are hungry. We need something that will keep there population in check. Next highest predator? Bears. Lets now introduce black and brown bears into the…[Read more]

You might focus on exectution. Most are simply glorified suburbs, separate from their surroundings. Plus, how do these things grow over time? They don’t you have to build another one right next to it, unlike real urbanism which is more “quilt” like, which can be stiched together. New Urbanism or now ‘transit oriented’ developments remind me of the…[Read more]

It may not seem difficult now, but give it a few years. It’s a skill many LAs don’t use a great deal (believe it or not) and you forget some of it. Then there is the whole test effect. You have very limited time, the environment is stressful, and, just like real life, a simple mistake can cascade into something where the solution does not work.…[Read more]
