Not if you have a license first, or don’t expect a big raise when you do get licensed. Its one or the other, not both.

You know, ASLA used to have schwag like hardhats, shirts, and balcaps and the like. I just went to their website and I don’t see it there anymore. I know I got a brass lapel pin from them and a sticker. I did find the OLD webpage using Google:

You might want to call them to see if they still have the…[Read more]

Be VERY careful what program you get into. I started my MLA this fall and I am regretting it. I have a BLA already, and am finding that the MLA program I am in is pretty much a repeat of the BLA. Being that you have experience already in planting and design, you should look for a program that can give you some sort of advanced standing. It would…[Read more]

Perkins + Will designed it. It look hideous because it is not grown in yet. The thing will be covered with plants and green walls. Maybe. If they can get the plants to live.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Grounding Landscape Urbanism… your definition. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 6 months ago
Well, one I can highly recommend is actually a compilation of many different authors pieced together from books and papers. It is aptly titled “Theory in Landscape Architecure” edited by Simon Swaffield. It has an eclectic mix of authors from different times/eras , and while I don’t particularly care for many of the selections, it gives you a nice…[Read more]

The GSD is not a fad, its been around a loooooong time. But some of the academic drivel that is a result of the “research” going on there is, and in academia as a a whole. Being active in academia myself (but I am PAYING to be there) I’ve been reading a bunch of LA theory lately, and can find logic flaws in almost all of it. Many of the authors…[Read more]

lets use another overused phrase to describe it…jumped the shark. Yes, even “jumped the shark” has, well, jumped the shark.

Like so much else that comes from the world of theory, it’s a buzzword. An arbitrary phrase create by someone in academia that simplifies a complex, and often undefinable idea. Environment, “green”, then ecological, new urbanism , and finally smart growth, are all examples of catch-all phrases that meant something once but that gradually lost…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic LA firms offering jobs to architects??? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 6 months ago
Many states will allow an architects stamp for many LA functions (there is some overlap), unless there is special requirements by the state saying that a LA must stamp the plans. I’ve seen tons of landscape plans stamped by engineers if they are part of an engineering set, and being that I worked in an Architecture office, often had my plans…[Read more]

From what I have seen, the model is kept by the city planning department, like plats. Check out this article.

Vectorworks. The 3D of Land-FX is Sketch-up.

That explains a lot! The technology used is the same, but architecture schools focus more on pure design and theory, something that is glossed over in many LA programs in favor of plants, grading and drainage, and other things. Many of the best LAs currently practicing were trained as architects. Laurie Olin and James van Sweden (though van Sweden…[Read more]

I agree that Revit is “not quite ready for prime time” in landscape architecture. I was not meant to be. I’m sure if the market demanded, AutoDesk will come up with something.
In the mean time, the closest things to BIM for landscape architects are products like Vectorworks Landmark or Land-FX (a plug-in for AutoCAD or Bricscad) Both offer some…[Read more]

Its the same around DC. The newer ex-urbs are now waaaaay out of town. But you can buy a good sized house, small yard, great schools, and much lower taxes than near the city. No wonder it’s so attractive. One caveat, the commute. Half hour each way on a good day, or two hours plus with traffic. Some take commuter rail, some take busses, but it is…[Read more]

I grew up in the ‘Burbs’ w/ a decent sized yard and undeveloped woods behind the house. Then we moved to a larger home IN the woods (but still in the burbs) where we kept as many trees as we could. Honestly, if I didn’t have a yard to play around in, I wouldn’t be a landscape architect. I now live more urban, but cannot wait to buy a house in a…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Difference between B.L.Arch and B.S.L.Arch in the forum EDUCATION 15 years, 7 months ago
I am researching every LA program in the country, and almost all (thus far) are BLA’s that are accredited. I only found one BSLA that is listed as accredited. Perhaps LAAB makes it part of accreditation that the professional accredited degree is called BLA (like it is supposed to be) and MLA. It’s that way with architecture. Thanks for the correction.

I just started an MLA (2yr) and am seriously reconsidering my decision as well. At the school I attend, it’s like starting over for a BLA. I can’t get the classes I wanted to take, and the rest of the time is wasted taking studios I took 15 years ago. I have 11years in practice, and am licensed. I don’t need to explore the profession to decide…[Read more]
