Oh and if this is a subcontract crew this sort of thing needs to be written into your working agreements. Otherwise you will not maintain all the clients that you have worked so hard for…

This happened to me with a contractor on our company owned crew when I was working for a design/build contractor. I talked to the individual and made it clear that it was not his place to do this, talked to his boss, and talked to the head of the design department. He started doing this to all the other designer/sales people and was eventually…[Read more]

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Is graduate school worth it? in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 2 months ago
This question has been asked and discussed multiple times and it sounds like the only way that a person with a BLA should go to grad school is for teaching or to try a different field(related or otherwise). If you already have a job it really does not make sense to quit working for more school, if you were unemployed it would make a little more sense.

I use:
willow green for grass
grass, nile, and emarald green for trees
flesh blush and brick red for colorful trees
buff and a couple of diff warm grays for site elements
cool gray #5 for shadows
a blue for water
Then I have a bunch of pencils that I color over with.

I am sure that no one is realisticly hoping to play a LA in a feature film, but it is more of a fun way to see how we are percieved by pop culture. It is fun to watch “how I met your mother” on tv and see the things that they think an Architect is. Of course he always has models and sits in front of his drafting board. Even though we have only…[Read more]

It looks great, thanks for sharing the pictures. I have started to see more and more like what you are showing below with the pavers. These seem to be used in place of tree grates. Much more attractive and less damaging to the trees.

If it was “lollipopped” it was likely done in the nursery.

I think it looks great! That is just what I was asking about at the beginning of the thread. Too bad about the narrow strip between the cars, but the juniper appear to be doing awesome so it does not look bad. Many city codes do not take into account the soil volume needed for trees and require more than necesary in parking lots. The design i…[Read more]

You are correct. Too bad. I like the good old shredded hardwood bark mulch that came from the paper mills. That was great. Decomposed into a soil builder and smelled great too. Lately the mulch has been getting worse and worse with more of the junk added to it and for some reason some people want to have fluorescent red mulch around there plantings.

Don’t forget about the mold and blob that forms on Cocoa shells. Not healthy for animals either.

Mulch in general is okay for the soil. In my area we tend to have really alkaline soil so acidity is a bonus, though you would be surprised how little evergreen litter actually acidifies the soil. In general lime is the alkaline agent and organic matter of all kinds is slightly acidic so no matter what you add you are adding to the acidity of th…[Read more]

In situations like that I always ask nature what works? I look at what has worked in other places just like what you are dealing with. If there is nothing that works in nature in your location I would plant what is most likely to work. I am guessing that shrubs might be your answer, can you think of any first succession(pioneer) shrubs that you…[Read more]

I used dynascape at a former employer. It is just another autocad type program(from canada I think) with different commands. If you know how to use one drafting program it should not be a big transition between them all. I switched from autocad, to Landscape pro, to dynascape, to microstation, and now to revit over the last 7 years. It was…[Read more]

I have a number of parking lots where I could move some green space from outside the parking lot and into islands, but that costs more since that equals more pavement to drive past the increased islands So is it really ecologically an important thing to have trees in islands? Maybe they should be smaller so that the space outside the parking…[Read more]

I have been taking walks at lunch and every time I see a “Landscape OOPS” I take a picture. It is interesting to look back and understand why we exist. Fun to see spruce trees planted 2 feet from buildings, edging used as a retaining wall, trees planted in the middle of a concrete driveway and everything is heaving. Well It should make a good slideshow.

Funny most people look at this tree and want to blame the tree for being diseased or something. Not the fact that there is no way that tree would ever work in that spot….

That looks like the lot at the home depot near my house.
