Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Some questions from a high school senior in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
You get one time in your life where it is “easy” to go to college and you really need to do it then. My wife tried to go back last year for just a couple classes to add to her degree and what a nightmare, with a kid, full time job, and me to deal with.

My University just switched to the 5 year masters of Arch. I think that all the 5 yr Barchs are becoming 5 yr Marchs. Makes sense to me too bad the LA dept. did not follow.

There is a lot of overlap between the two fields and if I were you I would really research what both fields do. Also I would call and ask for an informational interview at a local Arch and LA firm. That gives you a chance to look at their projects and get a good idea what each profession put into getting it built.
Something to remember in college…[Read more] -

Well said Todd. We are not necessarily a liberal profession, nor are we a conservative profession.

I like the regular electoral system. This deal where we recall anyone that does anything that we don’t like is a dangerous precedent. Let them finish their terms and then replace them. Except for those that are refusing to do their jobs. It is an embarrassment.

The left had their shot and they fumbled the ball, just like the right is currently doing. I would like there to be some tact by both sides so they can figure this stuff out without all the hate from the left and the zeal from the right.
Turns out the majority of people are not far left or far right. There is so many of us with our own wants and…[Read more] -
Jordan Lockman replied to the topic What Graduate Degree would you recommend as the best complement to an Undergrad in Landscape Architecture? Pros and Cons? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
Now that it has been a year since the thread was started what did you end up deciding on?
I know someone from school that went back for an MBA, that seemed to be a good choice for him.
I would love to do that. It would be helpful to know more about the business side of the industry. -

I am not sure that the current graders are paid? I am pretty sure that most of that is done by volunteers. The current system is expensive however. I am not sure how this will be any cheaper. I only see things getting more expensive, but that is life it is not progress unless it costs more.

I empathize with your situation. I started taking the tests right after my now three year old was born. It is difficult to carve out study time. I found myself only being able to work on problems during my lunch break.

It was not a secret that changes were coming. We did not know the details, but it should not be a surprise. It is frustrating for people that want to start taking the tests now, since all that you can safely take is A and B.
Well transitions are tough, I remember when all the colleges in my area were going from quarters to semesters. That was a…[Read more] -

I don’t know about the change in content, but I do support getting out of the hand drafting test business. I know that my study group had to pretty much learn to draw, scale, layout by hand all over again. I know that many of the older people in the profession feel comfortable with hand drawing fast, most younger people that are taking the tests…[Read more]

Transitions are difficult, but I am glad to see the tests be streamlined and made more inline with the current profession. I think that there are people that were failing the tests because they are not proficient in hand drafting skills. Which we do not need to be professionally, so it is funny to test us on that. Now I am sure the new complaint…[Read more]

Yes and if you are really upset, volunteer and help CLARB get better. They are taking a lot of our money for these tests, but they are protecting the profession.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Changes to the LARE…thoughts? Should we rush to pass the sections before they change? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 4 months ago
Take the first two sections, any way. Sections A & B are the same as(accepted in place of) the future 1 & 2, but the future test will cost more. If you have trouble with hand graphics wait to do the graphic sections after the change otherwise take them when it makes sense for your career.
If you don’t feel ready to take them wait, although there…[Read more] -

This is a good thing to compress the tests down a little. Also it may not hurt to take a and b now if you are going to take any of the tests since they will give you full credit for those two exams after the transition. If also looks like a good idea to make sure that C, D, & E are all passed, if they have been started. I can see the most…[Read more]

That is an odd question. The exams will be at pro-metric where the three current computer tests are administered. They were all PC’s of some kind. I am guessing that the vignettes will look something like the problems that the architects are currently working with.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Landscape Design & Solar Panels in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 4 months ago
So far they power our solar landscape lighting and that is about it. In the long term I could see roofs of buildings and landscape structures being made up of solar panels, but more practically we are already installing solar water heating. This is mostly on the roofs of the residence or businesses. I could see some creative structures built for…[Read more]

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic landscape or garden? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 4 months ago
A garden designer is a gardener that thought it might be fun to throw designer on the end. Even though they may or may not have been educated in design. So often they put together a assemblage of plants in a cool looking way. We as LAs would look at the plants as a part of a whole landscape and create something using the design principals first…[Read more]
